Correct.

Ask yourself this: if both Saban (after 5-seasons at MSU and 6 years total HC experience) and Kelly (after 12-seasons at ND and 31 years of HC experience) been on the market after '21 and Ed, who do you think SW would've hired?

IMO, SW would've hired the wrong coach 10 out of 10 times.

I'm not saying he had to hire a coach that has won a national championship. That's why I personally would not have been a fan of hiring Jimbo or Chizik or Mack Brown. I don't get to sit in interviews and hear about all of the detailed plans that a coach has for a football program. I want a coach that is going to win going forward. I'm not sitting here saying that BK was the worst hire of all time, but I'm not totally convinced he is the best either.

At some point you say NO . LSU is a football destination . Some up and coming guy will take a shorter contract .

That means unless you were hiring someone from those groups there was no track record of championship, or even playoff success, with whomever you hired. If past results are the best indicators of future success, then Kelly was about as good a hire as you can hope for. Unfortunately, when a HC has a NC championship game appearance, along with two CFP appearances, and is in the midst of an 11-1 season, he's not going to give up his current successful job to go elsewhere for a smaller contract.

What I have learned in reading the posts over the last few days is perhaps 75% of LSU fans have little to no understanding of supply and demand, or the college football marketplace. Evidently they believe LSU could hire a surefire championship HC and he would accept a 4 year deal worth $1M annually.

A lot of the posters here have the mentality of muh just fix it, as if it's that easy.

Fans see 10% of the picture.

EVERY AD would have hired Kelly. His resume would have been 10x better than either coach. This board, yourself included, would have gone ballistic is LSU passed on a HC who had a 92-39 record at ND, including a 44-8 record over the previous 4 year with 2 CFP appearances to hire

1. A HC with a 34-21-1 record with zero bowl wins in 5 years (Saban); or

2. A HC with a 10-25 record (3-21 in SEC play) in 3 years (Orgeron)

Everyone is a world class AD with the benefit of hindsight.

I disagree with almost every claim in this. If ADs only look at past accomplishments that may have been the case. Perhaps most do. But if they view candidates through a grid which include trajectory, potential, how driven (I could go on), then things look quite different.

FTR, lumping every poster into the same pool ("yourself included") is misguided. Kelly seemed like a meh hire from day 1. Were we supposed to be excited?

I keep hoping our next hire will be our "Spurrier." But his CFB record was only 20-13-1 at three seasons at Duke. Duke?

So should he have hired Kirby of Harbaugh?

I think we can all agree the Mo et was fine but the 10 year portion is just flat out stupid.

Pay the man. But give him 5 or 6 years. Long enough that if he does well you can re up.

If not you’re not stuck
