He definitely didn’t seem plugged in on a player level and at times in the sideline he looked really surprised at what was happening like he didn’t have a headset

Remember this year when Nussmeier was apparently injured in a game and Kelly said in his post game presser that he didn't know because 'the trainer didn't tell him', or something like that. I don't know wtf he was doing during games, but paying attention to what was happening in the actual game wasn't at the top of the list.

I believe it was his ego and pride all the way. No level of the LSU world accepted him fully and it was obvious he stuck out like a sore thumb culturally. The fake accent, the cringy 360 dancing shite, etc. He sensed that he wasn’t accepted nor liked, and his pride said screw them, they don’t like me or what I’m doing so they can kiss my arse, thus giving a nominal effort, ie whatever was convenient for him.

Just way more emotionally detached than normal. Like the day he got canned, cuts a meeting short (5 min so say) with Woodward, team meeting that night with players lasted 2 minutes, then he headed on out. Next day goes sits down alone at Superior Grill and stuffs his face like a man without a care in the world.

Makes you wonder if it caught him off guard or not that we'd axe him like that. With that kind of ego it might have.

Same difference. Up in age and motivation is gone. Especially when making $10m/yr

He would have won a national title Jayden Daniel’s senior season with a competent defense+ DC. Offense was other worldly

I remember a 4th down play that we called like a shitty screen for 0 yards and Kelly looks as surprised as me that we would call such a dumb play and was screaming at Joe on the headset

“you gotta do better Joe”

We had just come out of a timeout… you knew the play. that was the time to say do better you frickwit

Playing golf during the season is laughable. Good high school coaches don’t even do that.

Because he was guaranteed $100 million whether he was successful or not. What’s the incentive to work hard?

Instead of recruiting and game planning on the off week, he would rather play golf.

He also went on a lot of vacations. During off season when other coaches were grinding he was jet setting all over.

He was 65 and checked out.

One of the reasons some at ND were surprised when he left was because he had led many to believe that he was planning on retiring in 4-5 years. Woody made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. And lo and behold, his retirement timetable stayed the same. Just with a lot more in his bank account.

His teams seemed to be very unprepared. Dropping balls, unforced errors, calling timeout to avoid delay of game penalties, poor scouting, etc.
This. After the Ole Miss loss he said he didn’t like the gameplan. Uh, hello? Dude. You’re the head coach. YOU MAKE THE GAMEPLAN.

You dont have to be “lazy” to not put in 80 hr work weeks required in coaching. In his case, I think it was burnout, age, and the desire to win football games became less important to him.

And its not like he didnt have similar issues at ND. He went 4-8 in his 6th season there
