Matt House hired Dec21 2021

Reading this, keep in mind they’ve had one full recruiting class with their own guys. After taking over a team with less than 40 scholarship players.

2022 Defense by Snap Count

-6 DBs lost out of your top 15
- your best pass rusher & LB

2021 defense by Snap Countl

- basically no players left from that defense. These would be your Jr & Srs

Brian Kelly talked about needing another year. Honestly, you might need 2 more cycles.

I love what the transfer portal can bring but it’s wishful thinking rebuilding quickly with that

They’re learning on the job. Good news is I don’t think it can get any worse than what they did against Ole Miss.

Hopefully Welch and Stamps keep evolving

I thought I realized the amount of attrition but this is eye opening.

Ya if they don’t have DBs starting to emerge next year, then let’s panic.

Even then it’s still kind of early. DB development is a 3rd year position but it kinda is what it is at this point. These guys will get experience by fire

Yeah, to me they should just let guys like Perkins and Weeks play super-aggressive on clear passing downs and try to cause sack & strips like we did late in the Missouri game because we're normally getting burned with our holes in the secondary even when we don't play aggressive.

Yea. Even this defense with

Demario Tolan
Dwight mcGlorthern
Jordan Toles

Would be so much better

Meh. Lack of personnel could excuse us being ranked in the 60s or 70s. Not the 120s. House has enough pieces to not field—by far—the worst P5 defense in the country. And one of the worst in LSU history. He can get right the frick out after the A&M game (or the SECCG if we make it again by some miracle).

What would this look like for a competent year, say, from 2018 to 2019?

There has absolutely been a lot of attrition. No one will dispute that. But the front 7 should not be as bad as they are. That's on the staff.

Even with the personnel losses you can't tell me this group is far less talented that teams like: Nebraska, West Virginia, Michigan St., Syracuse, etc. Yet, they are playing FAR worse than any of those units. If this defense is as good as, say, Purdue, LSU is currently 5-1 with 5 double-digit wins.

That is the frustration. Not that the defense is struggling. That was somewhat expected. But that they have been atrocious. That's not ALL personnel deficiencies.

14 of the top 25 snap getters were not even on the team last season.

6 of these guys are Freshmen

There have been a ton of moving parts with very little older, talented players.

That’s a blind statement with too many variables to say with any type of factuality

They definitely have a lack of personnel but the way house uses his players is maddening.

On paper our defense this year should be so much better than 2021. That list of players somehow held Bama to 20 points and 6 rushing yards. Our defense this year couldn’t dream about those kind of stats unless we played Mississippi St every game.

Toles is just a warm body, but I'm beginning to think you're right that even he would be an improvement over some of the guys getting snaps at safety right now.
