Talked to a huge softball fan who happens to be the father of an up and coming pitcher who is a sophomore and pitching in the Texas 5a tourney this week. He said Torina coached his daughter as a side job while at UH. He has a tremendous respect for USL, but now that Torina is there he hopes LSU invites her to camp. She is well known in the softball world.

Not all people just watch football, some men have daughters who play softball and would naturally want to be excited for their kids. Moron

I love the "no one follows softball, you all are stupid it's only football at LSU"...lol..look NOBODY is a bigger football fan than me, and I have season tickets for bball and go to baseball a few times a year...but we ALL benefit from teams (that we must have anyway) that do well. The softball team is a nice SPORTS story....even if you do not follow them or care, you benefit from them getting national exposure this way....

Of course some people follow softball, but in reality just about every sport we have depends on football. The better the football team does, the more revenue it generates and gives more opportunities for these smaller sports to gain exposure. Yeah its great that they made it to the WCWS and Im happy for them, but it doesnt do as much for LSU as you might think.

i know i sound like some sort of crazy logical hardass, but throwing money into wells that never produce just does not make very much sense
That reasoning only makes sense if you have a choice. Title IX is very strict about spending on womens' sports. If we have to spend the money there anyway, why not try and get some success out of it?

Plus, as the other guy pointed out, if we are able to cut money from the non-revenue generating sports, there's no guarantee those dollars will land back in football, basketball or baseball, rather than the legislature's back pocket (via another university budget cut taking advantage of the "surplus" revenue generated by the cuts).

They never showed up for (sub)regionals.
But their fans were quick to point out:

They could have easily beat LSU

LSU had an easier bracket

Missouri sucked

ASU was the next coming of New York Yankees

It just isn't fair

An insightful AD should emphasize SUCCESS in revenue-consuming sports. They are not non-revenue, they are revenue consuming.

But having said that, there is a contribution to be made by these sports. LSU, BTW, refers to these as "Olympics Sports." Amateur sports ....by the DeCourbertin Credo. Look it up.

With the "ensured success mantra," comes a condition, in the hiring of these managers. It is as follows:
a) Show significat progress by year three of tenure;
b) win something significant by year 5, whether it be divisional or conference;
c) be prepared to leave the job, if you have not achieved by year 5!

Is this realistic? Yes it is and it is fair!! The "Marketing Benefits," are the only return on the dollar. They give the university, a level of publicity, not otherwise attainable.

Pay them well but place a heavy emphasis on ACCOUNTABILITY!!

Despite Alleva's shortcomings, he has made significant strides, with softball/women's tennis/swimming/wbb/and more need to get a stern warning!!

New Coach should be able to recruit very well now (our field is among best in country) and Fico is back. A very good core group is also back.

New Coach is doing a great job to make it as far in the Series. People support a winner and she is winning. Look at Basketball. Lose and no one will show up. LSU football was losing and that is how I bought tickets in tiger stadium. People support winners.....period.

Wow, JUST what I have been trying to say- but you said MUCH better. So which programs meet this and which do not..it is pretty clear and I hope we move in that direction, just as we did with swimming last year and women's tennis this year. Time will tell if these hires work, but the old one were not. and saintsfan22, I KNOW what you are thinking, but I will save us both some time and end my note now.

So playing #8 and #9 on the road in back to back weekends is not considered playing "a top ranked team on the road"? Noted.
