Pirates Manager Derek Shelton pulled Paul Shenes after seven innings in the midst of a no-hit pitching effort because Shenes had thrown 99 pitches in a 1-0 game Thursday. Why? What is wrong with a strong pitcher throwing a complete game, especially a no-hitter? For most of baseball's history, the starter was expected to go the distance. In the mid-70's Catfish Hunter threw 30 complete games and Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches over 13 innings to win a 4-3 game. But today, college and pro managers make the decisions before the game starts how long a pitcher will go. Twenty and more complete games was common place into the 1980's but there has been just one double-digit (11) complete game performance in 21st Century. Three complete games led the major leagues last year. Shenes deserved a shot at the no-hitter but he was stopped by manager interference.

Catfish Hunter threw his last pitch 45 years ago.

Have you watched baseball since?

Easy to say when we have nothing invested in this kid. He is the Ace to the staff for years to come as long as they can resign him when his contract is up, which is unlikely. They have a lot of guaranteed money invested in him over the next few years. nothing wrong with being cautious with him in year one. yes we know he would most likely be fine and I would have loved to see them let him go for it but it doesn't cost me at all if he happens to get hurt.

What a dumb call by that coach.

Sounds like a power move.

So he’s not Stephen Strasburg

The Dodgers once pulled Clayton Kershaw in the seventh inning with a perfect game going.

He was coming off injury and his long-term availability was considered more important than a single game.

They pulled Strasbourg a lot earlier than 99 pitches, and his rag arm still broke.

He was stopped because his coach said it was easy to see he was gassed.
There are hundreds of coaches who left pitchers in and then got hurt.
Even more coaches who took out a pitcher and they were good to pitch in the rotation. That coach can never prove himself right.

It is easy to say, and I do think the extreme pitch count restrictions are still debatable as to the extent to which they help avoid injuries, etc.

But Skenes reminds me a lot of Strausburg and that poor dude's been hurt most of his career. And the first thing everyone does when pitchers get hurt is look to see if the team, coach, organization overused him.

They’re still in the hunt for the postseason & their other ace Jones is already injured till August

It’s a marathon not a sprint. Had he not had the walk, you likely would’ve seen him in the 8th with a Perfect Game on the line.

Players today want to be paid record contracts, then demand “load management”. Basically being paid more, and playing less than previous generations.

Catfish Hunter threw 30 CG at 29 and his career was done at 33 after missing chunks of the next 4 seasons.

So probably why Skenes is on a pitch count

This isn’t a Skenes decision. This is The Pirates front office minimizing injury risk for the 5yrs they have him because in 2029, they know he’s a $400Million arm they can’t afford.

Paul Skenes is under team control and they manipulated his service time so they get him for essentially 7 seasons before he hits FA.

But also teams look at players as long term investments.

Fastball was at 97, splitter 93 in the 7th. I'm no MLB skip but to me its hard to say he was gassed when he was still hitting these numbers. He only threw 6 pitches in the 7th.

I would agree with the manager if he came out and said, "Look we cant let him throw more than 110 pitches and we know he cant go 2 more innings in 11 more pitches so we did what was best for paul and the team and got our setup guy in there.
