Jacques Doucet was on Jordy’s show this morning and he mentioned that he had a Heisman vote so they asked who he would vote for. First, he said he hasn’t watched Michael Penix at all and even got his name wrong thinking it was “Pennits”. Them went on to say “who else is in it?”

My point is you have hundreds of people like him who are only watching players from their school/conference and have no clue about any other players. And they are voting on national awards. When you ask why JD doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, it’s because of people like Doucet.

The biggest problem with the Heisman is its made into a predominant QB award.

Past 50 years:

QB: 26 (14 of the last 17)
RB: 20
WR: 3
CB: 1 (woodson)

49 of 50 are WR skill positions, its absurd that more recognition doesn't go to "BEST FOOTBALL PLAYER"

They give the voters a big packet of stuff, including stats and highlight reels, before they vote.

QB is so important it’s hard for anyone else to outshine a great QB.

the non QBs have won when there wasn’t a great QB or the best QBs really stunk in their loses.

heisman voting usually pertains to the best team instead of the best player

I mean that’s why they divide the voters into regional sections, to even out this bias.

Now go ask a reporter with a vote on the West coast who their heisman candidate is - they’ll say Penix or Nix & won’t mention Daniels.

It evens itself out.

That’s my point. This isn’t exclusive to Doucet or LSU. There are voters all over the country that haven’t watched the players that they are voting on.

Doesn't mean they are not doing more or better diligence at the time of the vote and doing homework on different players.

For all those in the press who have one vote, they ought to give a ten-fold strength of vote to the past Heisman winners. They have lived the role of the award and what it all entails. I have to trust that they have integrity sufficient to weigh in and (collectively) provide a balanced weight to the outcome.

I would say its a bigger problem that the Heisman usually goes to the best player of the top few teams.

2006 is a great example. Troy Smith was an average QB with average stats, but somehow won the Heisman. It should have gone to McFadden, but Arkansas had a few losses and Ohio State finished the regular season undefeated.

In the early 50s, Notre Dame's QB won the Heisman while the Irish finished the season with a losing record. No way that would ever happen today.

With the playoff expanding to 12 teams, I predict many will begin to argue that the award should be given after the playoffs conclude. However, my concern is that the the playoffs would influence the voting too much and the regular season would be forgotten.

I mean they’re voting on the player that they’ve watched. That’s kind of the point of dividing the votes into regions.

I mean it’s very likely Jaden Daniels would get most of the 145 votes for the South region & the 145 for Southwest too.

He’d probably be the 3rd highest for the votes in Far West.

The voting is not messed up bc there is a large amount of votes coming from different regions of the country. In the end, you’ll get the right players.

The biggest problem is that Jason white won it over Larry Fitzgerald.

Lost respect for the award since

here is how the Heisman is decided

Best QB on a Contender.
Great non QB on the Best team
Best QB

Group one includes:

Young, Burrow, Murray, Mayfield, Mariota, Winston, Newton, Bradford, Troy Smith, Leinert, White

Group 2 Includes:

Devonta Smith, Henry, Ingram. none of them win if Bama isn’t undefeated.

Group 3 Includes:

Caleb Jackson, Lamar Jackson, Manziel, RGIII, Tebow.

Carson Palmer is an interesting outlier. Looking at 2002, Miami has 2 guys with good stats. looks like the best team till they lose the fiesta Bowl. McGahee had 28 Td which is wild. Dorsey threw for 28 more. they combines for less votes than Palmer so not a matter of splitting the vote.

Reggie Bush is another outlier. Best player in what was considered the best team but Vince Young was also undefeated and had a great year.

maybe a category should be should be “best player on good USC team”

Daniels had two prime time opportunities to win the heisman, against Fla St and Alabama. He played poorly for both.

You think it's bad now?

Imagine being a voter in the 50's/60's when you only watched 1 game a week.

It's essentially just the quarterback of the best team award when it should be the best football player award. But like OP suggests, the media members that vote have neither the time nor inclination to decide who that is.

JD isn't even close to the Heisman. His top 3 games this year against good opponents was bad. FSU and MISS he was terrible and Against AL he was beaten by a freshman QB. There are 30-40 players better than him maybe more.

Nope

IMO regardless of stats

Daniels - on pace for 3723 pass yards 36 TD 912 rush yards 8 TDs in 12 games.

Nix - numbers and wins
Penix - numbers and wins

Jalen Green - on an undefeated James Madison team. Has 50 tackles 21.5 TFL, 15.5 sacks, 7 QB hurries, 1 int 1 TD, 2 FF, 2 pass defended, in only 9 games!

Ollie Gordon - Okie St kid has turned up the heat over the last 4-5 games. He's the reason why Okie St has turned it around

Nabers - if he averages 120 yards and 2 TDs over the next 3 games, he'll finish with over 1500 yards and 17 TDs in only 12 games.
