Why don’t teams play zone against LSU all game?

I’m glad they don’t, but it seems like stupid coaching not to.

Two reasons:

1. Early in the game coaches believe their man defense can stay with LSU because they are fresh.

2. Coaches don’t want LSU figuring out the zone too early.

That makes sense.

Still I’d take my chances playing zone all game. Not that LSU can’t get hot from 3, but that’s about the only way they really break it. And I don’t see TB putting in Graves for significant time.

We’re already hard to keep off the offensive glass vs man defense, vs the 2-3 we’d be unstoppable on the boards. Plus if we would get hot you could be looking at 15-0 type runs potentially in short spans of time with the pace we can get up to. 2 things you cannot do vs LSU, get crushed on the offensive glass and allow LSU to play at a high pace, you can’t control either in a 2-3 zone.

LSU has shown they will straight up destroy a team in man to man.

I think the thought process is if you start in a zone vs them and they figure that out you have no way of "switching" to man and hanging.

Your best bet, and it's kinda been proven, is to hang in man as long as possible and use zone to try and get back in it.

The problem is that LSU hasn't really figured out the zone all season. So why should a coaching staff be concerned about that?

I agree with the OP's point. My dad and I were watching the game together today, and I was saying the same thing to him. He was saying "why is LSU taking s many threes in the second half?". I said because Maryland is doing what just about every team does to LSU in the second half. They are playing zone, and LSU just doesn't seem interested in even trying to penetrate it. They stand around. And that's when I told him teams should play zone all game.

Thankfully, LSU finally decided to start driving late and made some big shots. I wish they would do more of that instead of standing flat footed as soon as the defense switches to zone.

#1 if you aren’t a zone team or at least play zone here and there you can’t just break it out and be successful.

#2 would be difficult to keep LSU off the offensive glass for 40 minutes in zone.

Well, it took almost too long, but LSU figured out the zone today. I think they will prepare for the possibility going forward as well.

Makes sense. Well, that bodes well for LSU’s chances.

Taylor must come out when we face zone

1. Either play 3 Guard Lineup Smart Waters Mays

or

2. Put Days in since he’s a better shooter than Taylor

Bottom line is Taylor isn’t respected outside so everyone else is getting a man and a half.

Not to mention, Benford made some very very poor decisions with his subs. If we would have run Mays, Smart, Tre, Days, Naz for more than 2 minutes of the zone defense, we would have absolutely slashed that shite up.

Waters and Mays can dribble penetrate past the zone.

Then if the other teams switch to man after getting beaten in zone early, they have no chance.

They play zone later on to try and delay the enevitable LSU tough win.

Yeah, they made a couple of baskets late, when they absolutely HAD to do something.

What happened the previous 17 minutes of game time?

They've had the same problems all season. A couple of plays does not equate to figuring it out. I think the urgency of the moment finally forced them to do something.

This has happened before late in games. yet they continue to have problems from game to game, despite continuously seeing the same things happening.

I'm proud of our players for doing what it took to win, AGAIN. I just wish the coaches would learn something after all these games, and work on moving around better against the zone to create opportunities to drive to the bucket.

Ummmm, slowing down the pace is EXACTLY what a soft 2-3 zone is designed to do... youbhve to work the ball around, swing it and go inside out to open it up, that takes time.
I think teams have confidence in their best defense and have a tendency to start in it. Starting in a soft zone when it’s not what you normally do can be detrimental to your teams psyche as well because you are admitting you don’t believe your team can hang with the opponent man on man

I think rebounding is a big reason too

not true at all. the tigers have "figured it out" every time they see it. the problem is, it does significantly slow them down.

zone is not easy. there's a reason why teams don't feature it. you almost have to read each other's minds. plus, the offense can spread the wings to the sidelines which leaves the paint wide open for one of the best point guards in the country and 2 of the best big men in cbb.

of course, you could say once waters drives, collapse the zone but that's easier said than done because you have to beat waters to the paint and even if you do, that leaves javonte/sky/marlon open to do whatever.

it's a gamble that works for a few possessions. turgeon is a good coach and he didn't use it much so that tells you it's effectiveness has a limit.

You can play as fast as you want vs a 2-3 zone. Shots need to drop but it cannot slow your pace.
