re: Why Does Everyone Think Lonergan Is An Upgrade?

Seriously GABlueDog if you take the time to break each of their highschool films down, you would see that Lonergan was the better of the two. He was more agressive and def brought the whole truck with him at Rummel. He played tackle in highschool so he did nt get the first look at the center position. Hebert has technique, but he lacks strenght. Watch film of the two and you will see the difference.

I think the general consensus is that after watching T-Bob get his arse handed to him almost every week, people wanted to see what Lonergan could do.
I think this pretty much explains the optimistic feelings for Lonergan.
But, from what Lonergan showed at the end of last season, he is not an upgrade from T-Bob. However, P.J. is bigger and stronger while being a younger player, and at this point, I think LSU fans that pay attention to whats going on up front would just like for the center to hold his ground and not get knocked into the backfield.
I think T-Bob always had the potential to be a good player at LSU if he was very dedicated to improving. First thing is he has to get his weight up. He is athletic, agile, flexible and has good feet. But all those things really don't matter when you are getting knocked back. If he dedicated himself to going hard in the weight room and got a lot stronger and got his weight up to 295-300, while maintaining his flexibility and agility, he'd be a very quality center.

They don't. In my opinion T Bob is definitely one of our 3 best interior lineman.

If Lonergan is not an upgrade from Hebert then we need find a new center. Hebert is smaller and was manhandled. Lonergan in my opinion is at least as good as Hebert and bigger. If 2 lineman are around even in talent and the starter keeps getting driven backwards then I go with the bigger lineman. Hitt and Hebert were bad last year. You can't get much worse.

Apparantly so did the coaches last year, which was why LSU was 110 out of 120 (approx.) of all D-1 teams on offense (with three senior RBs currently in NFL camps).

I believe Lonergan is better from what I have seen. Competition will hopefully push them both.

Maybe Hebert picked up the calls quicker but was not a physical.
Maybe Lonergan was late to meetings and needed to not see the field.
Maybe just getting a year older is generally better, just maybe.
Could be a multitude of reasons, but we sucked at center last year.
TO assume we will never improve is not realistic.

While on the topic of the OL, Josh Dworaczyk is another that has to improve drastically over last year. That guy had just as many problems getting knocked around last year as Hebert and Hitt did. At one point against Ole Miss, Powe ran right through him unimpeded. I mean Powe literally didn't even break stride. Just full speed right at Jefferson.
He's listed at 295 now on the roster, but that weight apparently was taken when he was sick, so he's back up over 300, but I am still concerned about him. He honestly looks like an overweight TE. But, if he has put on over 20 pounds since last year I give him credit for working hard, hopefully it is quality weight that he won't drop throughout fall camp.

Is there a chance we will see Hebert play some guard?
I read where Miles said the other day that Hebert can play guard.

Please, spare us! We don't need guards being pushed back into the backfield by DT's on the other teams!

T-Bob's issues are size, strength and power at the point of contact. Playing guard isn't gonna change that one bit. Because of his flexibility, athleticism and quickness, his best possible position really is center. He just has to get bigger and stronger.
I feel good about Blackwell at guard. If Dworaczyk isn't much improved, I'd like to see Josh Williford get a shot.

Yes, Josh W>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hebert at OG!

Because it's not that hard to be an upgrade over T-Bob.

If Hebert's so quick and agile and athletic, maybe he needs to be moved to DL.

I think it is pretty clear that Miles, Crowton, and Studs tried to go lighter and more athletic on the line and it backfired. They were too small and didn't have an established FB, so we couldn't power run effectively. We didn't have enough consistency in the pass game and enough quickness with Scott in the backfield to run a single back spread. We were stuck between two philosophies with players that didn't fit either. With the success of the power game in 07 and 08, I look for us to head back in that direction. Why else do you think Miles keeps talking about FBs? We will see a lot more I and 2 TEs this season. I think it makes more since, because our coaches certainly don't know how to run a spread attack.

Why nobody has asked why is T-bob small. Why were most of our interior lineman ( from reading concerns) so light? Why cant these guys gain weight and if they cant gain weight whats going on? If those things arent the issue, then why were they recruited to play at LSU if their fricking small?
Posted on 8/16/10 at 10:31 pm to misey94
Very good analysis about trying to go more athletic on the OL & that not working. I can just see Crowton & Stud, the two worst assistants on the staff, spending a lot of time thinking about coming up with that horrible idea & Miles going along with it!

lonergan has potential. The only thing that worries me is the hebert was never %100 last year and still kept the job. Some people will say its all politics. I wouldnt mind lonergan playing center and have hebert play guard.
That is assuming the current line doesnt work or someone gets hurt. I would much rather hebert in there over branch rt now.

I agree. It seems the only ones who gain weight are the 240 lb TEs that we recruit to convert to OL.
