you'd come away saying, "man that guy is a fricking a-hole"

then change the title of the thread from "good" to "nice"...they're 2 different things

if saban were so happy at LSU, he wouldn't have struggled to decide if he wanted to go to the NFL or not

Well, in the end he left, so there was at least a part of him that was unhappy or he wouldn't have left.

On this same topic, if you ever get a chance to, ask Skip if Saban was an enjoyable person to work with ... most would be surprised as to the extent at which Saban and Bertman hated each other.

Some school bigwigs and powerbrokers have a need for the HC to remember ther wives names at gatherings, some want the HC to do golf outings and be nice to them..an issue with Saban by some LSU and Bama bigwigs at both SEC stops for NS.

Me, I want him to win, help the players get their degrees, and could care less if he tells the President of the USA no thanks to a dinner offer, because he needs to prepare his team, in fact I like him even more for such a snub.

Of my crew, myself and one other chum are hardcore Sabanistas, and catch hell from the other three in our group, and many others at Touchdown Village group we tailgate with, whom hammer us for being Miles fence-sitters these past years.

not really

saban always thought of himself as an NFL guy coaching in college

it just so happens that he's a CFB guy

If Saban's AD didn't try to renegotiate his salary guarantee after winning BCS hardware, or pennypinch his recruiting outlays, maybe Huizenga's offer of all that cash and private jet usage,etc..wouldn't have looked such an alternative at the time?

He obviously struggled with his choice, and had almost instant regret, but the choice was done. He wanted his old job back, it was already taken. Let it go.

guys like urban meyer and saban are fricking cocks, but they're beloved and publicly represent the university well

Goes both ways. You love them for a while and they wear on you.

But generally, people don't care while they have them. OU fans don't care that Bob Stoops is one snippety mother fricker. Florida fans don't care that Meyer is an arrogant prick. Bama fans don't care that Saban is just an all around frick.

Why?

Because they are all good. Be good and you can get away with a shitty personality.

i agree

but i've seen a bunch of posts on the rant that specifically ask about a coach's character in their evaluations. i mean this doesn't change anything in the real world, i'm just trying to get inside the mind of a rantard

I don't care if they are a nice guy or not. Bernstein was a huge jerk but damned if he didn't produce beautiful music. Miles Davis? Huge jerk too but top musicians fought to play for him because he produced the best jazz and got the most out of his bandmembers he could.

All I care about it are they ethical are not and will look out for the program and players. Dont' want bowdens who recruit thugs or Nolan Richardsons who simply use them and lose them without even trying to give them an education.

I think in a lot of cases it was one thing people who didn't know shite about football could say with certainty about him. For others, still, a counter for his many retarded sound bites.

Old adage about what happens to "good guys".

nice is not the question...'good' is. slow wants to know why LSU fans don't like low-character, 'bad' guys.

And I was referring to what SFP was asking in his initial post.

Agreed. To me, I would prefer a "good guy" coach to an a-hole coach, but the only true thing that matters is winning. You can get away with just about anything as long as you're winning.
