I understand the need to pass, but we cannot just step on to the field and throw the ball and do nothing else. We need a BALANCED attack. Obviously throwing the ball is important when needed.

Who has said we ONLY need to pass?

Seriously, where are you getting this?

I don't even think we need to be 50/50 like O suggested. I just want to be capable and have a good enough pass game that opposing defenses have to cover the whole field. WE HAVE NOT HAD THAT THE PAST THREE SEASONS.

Thus far, we seem to be on our way.

I think I speak for the majority of LSU fans when I say we were just tired of NOT being able to pass the ball versus passing a lot.

I feel exactly the same. The only reason I started this thread was due to the fact that there was a thread that was complaining about the amount we passed the ball in our first two games against opponents that we absolutely blew out.

And how much better would that run game be if there was an equally established passing threat?

There is no key. You take what they give...run or pass. Just need to be proficient at both if needed.

Being able to do both is ideal and at times very necessary. Being deficient in one or the other will cause you problems against good defenses. This shite ain't rocket science people.

Reasonable minds can differ there. There are several reasons to be run heavy:
- BYU basically played prevent giving us 6 upcoming. Take what they give you
- Don't give future opponents film on your pass tree and tendencies

The counter is:
- There will be 3 or 4 games where we need Etling to win the game with his arm and it's best to have him do that with significant in game reps (even against inferior opponents) before asking him to suddenly flip the switch.
- getting Etling and the receivers in sync
- producing enough passing yardage to cause future DCs we will face to be less inclined to fully commit to stopping the run, so our run game works better

Too many are interested in the entertainment value of passing. Been playing too much fantasy football. One sets up the other and you need both, but the ground game opens up the pass. If you can't pass, all the chunks in the world won't win. Carl Otis Trimble couldn't hit a barn when he played. I recall aTm figuring this out, loading the box, jamming the ends and daring us to pass, which we couldn't. We got embarrassed that season. Also, a good ground game controls the clock and keeps the opossing offense off the field. In addition to a running game to set up the passing game, you need a good defense. Defense still wins championships.

We can run the football and beat most teams but we can't run the ball an entire game and beat the most important team on our schedule which is Alabama. Usually when Bama loses it's because they can't stop the passing game except on rare occasions like against Ohio St. We HAVE to throw the ball in order to beat Alabama. Have to keep them honest so that they can stop stacking the box against us. We don't have to spend the entire game passing the ball but we have to be balanced which we never really have been in the past. Running the ball will win 10 games a year but if we can develop a balanced passing attack we could win 11-12 games during the regular season and make it to the college football playoffs.

Passing is invaluable. You just don't have to do it much vs low level competition.

Under two minutes and down by 6, you probably wish you had practiced and implemented a better passing game

Yea and where did this get us? A SEC championship? A National Championship? We're lucky we had great backs that helped us stay afloat.

You have to have a passing game so you aren't 1 dimensional... Now do you get it????

Because balance is the key. Being able to run or pass whatever you want to and not let the down and distance dictate.

I don't think you need a huge number of attempts to win football games.....

Efficiency is the most important stat....if you make them pay when you throw it, it changes the complexity of the game.

If we can maintain our efficiency rating in the 170s....we will have a potent offense.

After 2 games

Come out and hit bama with 2-3 solid play action plays for medium to big gains and there is no more 8-9 in the box.
Except unfortunately Bama rarely loaded the box.
Saban doesn't approve of such and if you can't handle your gap there's another 5 star behind you who will.

Obviously, passing the football is not the key.
We can beat 80 percent of the teams on our schedule with a "smash them in the mouth" mentality.
The ability to consistently move the football through the air is the key for the other 20 percent.
