. If Brodhead had left Stovall alone, we would not have had the Archer-Hallman years.

We would have continued to get a bowl invite in November, proceed to lose to Tulane and/or Moo state, and then not make a bowl game at all the next year. Rinse and repeat. He did nothing to bring us out of the late '70s funk except beat Alabama.

Archer won the first couple of years with Arnparger's recruits. 10 wins in '87 and SEC championship in '88. What's unfortunate is arnsparger not hanging around, not getting rid of Stovall.

We totally dominated their lines, both offensively and defensively. It was Dalton Hilliards coming out party. He and another freshman RB from New Orleans were tearing mamas defense up. bama fans were turning around asking, "who are these guys."

Believe me, the score was not indicative of the domination. That was a strong Bama team that got waxed between the lines...

Disagree. He won the SEC and went to the Orange Bowl!

The beating was so bad that Bryant wanted to come in the Tiger locker room and tell them himself. Yes the score was 20-10. But in no way was Bama ever in the game. I think they had zero yards at the half and LSU was up 17-0. If you ever get to see this game it could be the most physical beating LSU ever put on a major opponent. They could have played for a month and Bama still wouldn't have won the game.

To be fair hilliards coming out party was the gla game that year. And the other freshman running back was Garry James. And yes lsu dominated bama that year. After the game it felt like lsu had won 41-10. Stovall was a great coach who came in after the tragic death of Bo rein. One heck of a nice guy. Maybe too nice. Very fun teams to watch when he was the coach.

Agree that Stovall is a class act. He came to speak to our group a couple times. Truly an inspirational speaker and a credit to the Purple and Gold.

Sometimes a great man is not a good coach. And sometimes a great coach is not a good man. But in the game of life, Stovall is a winner, and that's what really counts.

Often times, a former player is not a good coach. But yes indeed, Jerry is a great person and a great representative of LSU.

I'll always admire and respect Stovall. He was the runnings back coach under McClendon. He treated me no better or worse than Terry Robiskie or Charles Alexander even though I was a scout team running back. He was one tough dude. One day at practice, he challenged a hot shot fullback out of Houston (undisclosed name to protect the arrogant) to go into the padded wrestling room one on one and see who would come out. The challenge was not accepted.

Might be difficult to pinpoint one reason--even though he did a classy thing in keeping Bo Rein's staff, you wonder if maybe he should have concentrated on getting the assistant coaching staff that is his and he works the best with.

Also, as you see in other sports, some who were great athletes don't make the best coaches. Often, they don't possess the teaching skills to impart that knowledge on to all the players, not just the top notch ones.

I love to hear him talk about first arriving on campus as a freshman recruit. "You mean I get my own bed and I can eat all the food I want?"

Stovall is a godly man and a great Tiger.

Part of it was because Alashit had 0 first downs at the half. Our defense wrecked them that day.

As for Stovall, keep in mind he took the job because his alma mater needed him after the tragic death of Bo Rein. He answered the call on very short notice because he was a LSU man.

Some of you have your facts messed up. Brodhead said on numerous occasions that he was hired to fire Stovall. The LSU BOS wanted Stovall out but none of them wanted to be associated with firing an LSU legend. So they hired an outsider to do it.

The 1982 team was a head scratcher, to say the least.

Dalton James Gang's freshman year. Other freshmen on that team were Wickersham, Steve Rehage and Karl Wilson.

It was the senior season for guys like Alan Risher, Leonard Marshall, Ramsey Dardar, James Britt.

Britt and Marshall went in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft.

Some of my favorite underclassmen of the 1982 team (other than the freshmen above), include Eric Martin, Rydell Melancon, Eugene McDaniel, Gene Lang, Jeffrey Dale, and Lance Smith.

It was the last class (other than an odd redshirt or two) that had any real connection with Mac, in that he recruited that team's seniors and coached them for 1 season.

Which is the opposite of what they did to fire Mac - they had to bring Dietzel back to have someone with enough stature to fire him.

They're spineless either way.

he did say something along those lines. And obviously you're too young to have seen the game and realize that LSU did actually whip them much worse than the final score. That is possible you know.

Alabama didn't have a first down in the first half...it was a beat down...Dalton Hilliard's coming out party...

In 1982 were the Tigers wearing purples for the Miss. State and Tulane games? I can't figure out why they lost to those two lowly teams, when LSU had already beaten good teams like Alabama, Florida and Florida State.
