I want to know why it is considered impossible to get a play off in 1 second on a "ready to play" signal from a ref.... something i don't think the refs in Auburn did anyway.

As soon as he gives the signal, you snap the ball, which is the point of the gesture. Why does everyone seem to think it is impossible? Is there a minimum amount of time that must occur between signal, clock start, and snap?

We need a Gif... Again, I don't know if the ref gave any signal for play starting.

I think it's likely that if the clock had displayed tenths of a second, it would have only been at like .3 seconds left. That is not enough time, IMO, to get the snap off.

I'm more concerned with why time wasn't added back onto the clock so there was more than 1 second left.

YouTube at the last 24 seconds.

Forward stopped???

Down with 3 seconds, maybe only 2, but NOT 1:

I see no signal to start the clock:

I could maybe understand it if this was bang-bang play and we didn't get the snap off in time, but there was a minute long debate amongst the officials as to what to do...

In that case the signal to start the clock should have been so conspicuous that Ray Charles would've see it.

From what I remember, this rule had changed quite a few years back (once upon a time, the clock stopped when a player went out of bounds. Period). It was changed to involve forward progress, and if, in the referee's judgement, forward progress is stopped, the clock can continue.

To me, it's one of the most stupid-arse changes in football; in a period where it seems you are trying to define things clearly (catches, etc) and ELIMINATE judgement calls, they ADDED a stipulation that makes it even more of a judgement call.

Personally, I think someone important and influencial was butthurt by someone stopping the clock; maybe it's the networks, trying to keep the games at/under 3 hrs.
