re: Why did PM use Fontenot in the 9th last night?

Hess threw 55 pitches. You don't want to over-throw him in his return to the bullpen. Could he have thrown the 9th...yes, but a lot more harm could come from it than good imo.
Fontenot had a 5 run lead & needs to get out of his current funk. He's not going to get out of his funk by sitting on the bench. You also get Fontenot for 2 innings on Sunday if he only throws 1 inning on Friday.
I thought it was the right move.

Fontenot and Beck were both warm i believe (unless the scotch skewed my memory). PM felt the best option for that situation was Font. And he got the job done. It was an important game in an important series, he wanted his best arm in the game

No brainer. He was already hot. It was a 1 run game at the start of the bottom 8.

I can’t take your question seriously if you don’t know how to spell the head coach’s name correctly.

No baseball manager would send his best remaining arm out to pitch the ninth inning with a 5 run lead.
But no one here should be shocked that CPM did just that last night. He's been making that type of questionable decision for more than a decade.
Fontenot should be available for an inning tonight so it may well be a non issue.

quote:I think i get the direction you are trying to go with this, but what you said is just not true. And you come off as a douche with your wording. With this logic, might as well put the closer in for the 9inning whether we are up by 1 or 8.
Do you know what a closer is? When you're trying to finish off a good team you have to go to your best arm for the situation. Regardless of 2 run lead or 5 run lead
You play 3 game series on the weekend. If your best relief pitcher goes 40 pitches in the 9th when you are up 6, and the following day you are up 1 in the 9th, you kinda fricked the pooch there....
But I think Fontenot pitched to get him out the little funk like someone alluded to earlier.

I'm not saying you go to your closer in any situation. And I should have worded it better, but I get irritated with ppl questioning every little move CPM makes, even the ones that work.
But he was warming already bc it was a 1 run game. And you HAVE to win that one. So go with the guy you trust and guarantee yourself a win

If Fontenot is the recognized closer going forward then the decision to pitch him last night was the wrong decision. It was definitely the wrong decision.
If LSU is going to run multiple guys out there to close games as the season winds down then it doesn't matter.
But if he's the closer then it's hardly worth the debate. It was a bad decision.

quote:I completely understand. Not trying to be a dick by any means, but you worded it towards the fact that our closer should come in whether we are up by a lot or a little. No hard feelings bud. Sorry if I came off harsh.

Edit: Im one of the 20% it seems who still loves CPM even though he makes some bonehead calls. Every coach isnt perfect, but our fanbase wants perfection and will bitch and HOLD ON to their disgust with the little things. (I get mad at him too, but I got mad at Nick Saban back in the day on calls and look where he is). Some of our fans just need a xanax....

Here’s the deal, Fontenot and Beck were warming. Reality was PM had three choices up five runs.
He could leave Hess in. He could go with Fontenot. He could go with Beck.
I’m a fan, and I’m wondering what Mainieri’s thinking was. I’m not saying he’s wrong, I just wonder why he did what he did.
A good reporter should have asked him and then we would all know what he was thinking.

Would have been nice to not have Hess today. He’s need to be the closer, not a way to get to the closer.
