Anyone else wondering why Maneri use Fontenot in the 9th inning last night? It could come back to haunt him.

Probably trying to get him out of the funk he's been in.

Do you know what a closer is? When you're trying to finish off a good team you have to go to your best arm for the situation. Regardless of 2 run lead or 5 run lead

It’s a fair question.

Possible reasons would be that since he had warmed he wanted to use him, of possibly he wasn’t confident in Beck. Another possibility was he thought we would get rained out today and consequently we would not need him.

It was an appropriate question for a writer to ask. I wonder if any did?

I’d guess Peterson or Beck tonight.

How’s the weather in BR? Has everything cleared out of there?

I think Fontenot was already loose since it was a much closer game going into the 9th. After we went up a few runs he just stuck with the plan of bringing in Fontenot

He had a plan based on what his pitchers can do and what he needs them to do over the weekend. It worked. Hess pitched his max number of pitches before the 8th inning ended.

It amazes me that so many here think they know our pitchers and baseball in general better than our Hall of Fame Head Coach and his staff (especially Alan Dunn). Of course everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

Weather in BR is good and has been for hours. We did get almost 3" of rain this morning, but I am sure the field was covered.

Weather shouldn't be a problem. Looks like everything has cleared out.

Was Hess at his max? He’s not gonna pitch again this weekend if I had to guess. He routinely pitches 100 pitches as a starter. I personally thinning letting Hess finish it would not have been a bad idea if he’s burnt anyway. Last Sunday Fontenot didn’t look his greatest. Maybe it was because he pitched the day before?

That's not how it works.

Many a time Mario Rivera remained in the pen when the Yanks had a large lead.

And if PM goes to Beck/Vetmeier (sp?) and they give up the lead then everyone is calling for his head right now

I disagree with both of you.

We don’t have a closer.

We have several guys that Paul is going to lean on in high leverage situations but he’s not going to not put in a clutch guy who is already warm just because it’s not a save situation.

Situations like this is what makes people who claim CPM is rough on pitcher’s arms look like idiots.

If they get warm they come in.

Absolutely. But the question isn't whether Beck and Vetmeier are reliable in clutch situations. That's a different discussion.

The question is why potentially waste your closer with a five-run lead. I believe Fontenot can throw tonight but why risk it when he might be needed to protect a one-run game?

No. Why not use him there?

First off, it is the first game of a very important series and if you have a chance to guarantee yourself the win, then you do what you need to, to get it done.

Second, and more important, this is college baseball, not pro. In college, it is unlikely that most teams are going to use their closer on back to back days like in the majors. So if you want to maximize his use in a series, then go to him in the first game when the situation calls for it and then have him to use again on Sunday to either get you the sweep or the series win. If you hold till Saturday, then chances are you get 1-2 innings out of him for one game of the series.

Third, with the pen the way it is now, on Saturday, you get 6-7 innings out of Walker, then depending on score you can go to Vietmier or Beck for setup to Peterson to close. Or you can even possibly get a 2-3 inning save out of Peterson. Then on Sunday, you have Marceaux for 5-6 innings, then Beck or Vietmier (Moffitt or Costello if necessary) and then Fontenot again for 1-2 innings. That is how a good manager maximizes his bullpen.

Here is why!

Fontenot already warmed up. Already the plan... probably. Hess has been not so good as a starter. Coach M. promised Hess a starting job to get him to come back. CM has been needing him out of the starting role but he promised.

Finally the choice is clear. Even to Hess. The change to bullpen happens... finally.

Hess comes out and has a outing that is straight up amazing.

9th comes around. Decision time. Pull Hess and solidify a great outing and solidify in Hess's mind that this was the best move. Or option to leave Hess in and take a chance that he has a less than perfect outing.

F that! Why chance messing up a Hess mentally (mostly on this being the right decision) with a possible subpar 9th when you can lock in a great performance on his first outing out of the bullpen!!!!
