Then everyone would bitch that we are playing cupcakes
We would just get the “that won’t work against Bama” threads constantly

I used to love playing premier games in week 1 when we actually would win them. Aside from Miami in 2018, we haven’t proved we’re capable of that since Wisconsin.

why can't our coaches get the team ready for week 1?

Playing cupcakes doesn't reveal anything about your team. If your opponent is weaker than your own second string, why bother?
If your opponent is made up of players none of whom would even be given a scholarship by your team, how does that help you to evaluate and improve?
Hiding under the bed in week 1 is absolutely worthless in exposing your flaws. If you don't know what your weaknesses are, how do you fix them?
Learning "we aren't the team we thought we were" will be a good thing.

I was excited when we scheduled USC in Vegas. I don’t even want to make the trip after our annual opening loss tradition we have decided to continue. Not spending all that money to watch us “figure things out” in week 1 again.

We played terribly in week 5 against Auburn then got our arse kicked in week 6 last year against Tennessee. Then we beat Bama and came out and played terribly the next two weeks against Arkansas and Texas A&M. We can lay an egg at any point. I hope BK can get it right this year and get them to play more consistently.

quote:funny how FSU didn't need an easy tune up game.
If we played Virginia, we would have been able to work out our obvious problems while still dominating a power 5 team.
This is a massive excuse. Our coaching staff had all of spring and fall camp to identify our strengths and weaknesses and adjust accordingly.
Tune up cupcake games aren't necessary. Good coaches have their teams ready to go on day 1.

Who did Bama, UGA, Ohio State, USC, and Michigan open with?
You honestly think Nick Saban needs a cupcake game to figure out his team???

WE should always play a couple of stiffs the first couple games to get our feet wet
Cupcake games should be banished from college football entirely. Make all the games vs power 4 teams. No more undefeated NCs

We’d lose anyway later on. It doesn’t matter this team is just not that good

Same crowd who b**ch and complain that we played Syracuse and Washington now b**ching and complaining we're playing FSU/USC/Clemson.

2. We would know to play Perkins how he should have been played.
I agree with all your comments except this one. You would have gotten away with Perkins at inside linebacker against a weaker opponent. That was not going to be fixed until after the experiment showed that it didn't work which would only be against teams with our talent level. Grambling not good enough to show Perkins in the middle is a mistake.

Teams improve the most from week 1 to 2.
This is true but avoiding tough week 1 games is a loser mentality. Good teams don't make excuses, coach and play better and win the damn game. Kelly will make necessary adjustments going forward and I bet we will have better performances in week 1 going forward.
