Why can’t Offensive Linemen block past the line of scrimmage?

Rewatching the game, it made me wonder why it’s illegal. I don’t see any unfair advantage to be had from it. Defensive linemen can block anywhere they want.

They can on running plays, can not on passing

Because you could go take out a defensive back 10 yards downfield. Seems a bit unfair.

Because if a lineman has his helmet in the chest of a linebacker it’d be pretty easy to complete a pass.

I guess there was a concern that every play would turn into some sort of screen play, with OL forming wedges downfield.
Really not sure.

Because only certain positions are eligible to be receivers. If they are not receivers, they don’t need to be downfield on a pass play.

Because it's in the rule book.

I think if the ball is thrown behind the line of scrimmage they can. Before the ball is thrown down field , no!

But then it would be pretty easy for a defensive lineman to get to the QB through the vacated hole.

I remember Herbstreit saying during a game a couple of years ago that the rule is called sporadically and often missed by the refs, FWIW. It can't be easy for linemen in RPO systems.

How about Monday night, ladies and gentlemen? Still in awe.

The LBs and Def Backs read O lineman to react to plays run/ pass. So there is an advantage. They often allow 3 yards for a lineman to be down field before a penalty. We got away with this a bit this year.

Defensive linemen do not block, they just eat folks. Two different positions. O line tries to block the D line.

They can.

3 yds.

But, it's not about whether they are blocking, they just can't be downfield.

The penalty isn't 'blocking downfield' the penalty is 'ineligible downfield'. If they go 5 yds downfield and lay down and look at the clouds it's still a penalty; so it is about the location, not the action of blocking.

Gotta give them 3 yds because a DL could throw them across and you have to allow for 'chasing' to a degree.

Funny seeing someone upset about a rule that has been in place forever. I guess it was never an issue when LSU was mostly a running team.

The way you ask it makes it seem you’re the only one who has asked it in 100 years.
