Doubt it. Considering Myles’ injury history, the backup will likely get meaningful snaps at some point next year. Nuss knows this.

He's going to transfer out when? After spring? After fall?
I would hope you see the follow up questions that are coming after you answer.

Who's gonna be the backup behind Myles?
Howard, obviously

Cause he aint stay here.

Sadly this is probably not far off from reality of the situation. I’d have to think Myles is the day 1 starter next year if he stays healthy because at this point he’s a grown man. If Howard is as good as some say Nussmeier very well could hit that portal. In this day and age most kids want to play and have no desire to RS. Hell everyone we recruit coming out of high school thinks they are going to stay 3 years then turn pro. Very few QBs will sit and wait their turn like Myles Brennan or say a Mack Jones did.

Nuss has no backbone. Arkansas broke him.
Posted on 1/3/22 at 3:04 pm to longtigerdong21
If he really wanted, theoretically, both he and Howard could be the backup, each play in up to 4 games as insurance, and still keep redshirts.
Not that it’s ideal, but.

Because he likely won't be here after spring

I believe that he's keeping that extra RS year in case he want's to transfer at some point.

Nuss is probably expecting that Walker Howard will take a RS in 2022. If Nuss can get all the garbage playing time next year, his experience should give him a better chance to win the job in 2023. If he can't win the job in 2023, he will have taken the redshirt and gained another year of eligibility to start over with a transfer.
Simply put, burning the RS does not put him in the best position to succeed.

I believe he transfers out after the Spring, so he’s keeping that extra year for another program, not LSU.

Nussmeier of all players is one that needs a red shirt season physically. He's also the type of talent that will stay at college ball bc he likely won't have too high of an nfl projection.

He will be the backup next year and get a good amount of playing time especially if Myles gets banged up. Depending on how that goes, he will either be the favorite to start 2023 or decide to transfer out with 3 years left.
He won’t be transferring out before the end of next year.

quote:He could. You can redshirt any year. It's not common, but both possible with those circumstances and within the rules.
Why Cant Nussmeier just redshirt next year behind Myles?
The only reason Nuss himself would have issue is that if he wanted to transfer the redshirt needs to be on the books because you transfer with the eligibility you have... not with the eligibility you might have in the future.
That goes for any player. It's somewhat of a bargaining chip. It is also a very real and logical thing. If you are in the portal eligibility left is one thing that is looked at by the receiving team. Just a fact of life.

It's complete horseshite that the NCAA will deem him playing in this game as "burning a redshirt."

Would you feel the same if this situation was happening to an Auburn or A&M QB? You'd be screaming bloody murder that the NCAA is bending the rules for those teams.

Maybe. I suspect I would hardly pay it any mind if any team's 3rd string quarterback was allowed to play in a meaningless dinkiest of the dinky bowl game - even a "heated rival."

Now, the only real, plausible, and practical reason for him to keep a redshirt in place is for "leverage" in the portal. And for someone in the QB position, who is supposed to be a team leader, that doesn't bode well. Some on the team will see it for what it is, some won't. But it is the one's who see it that way who may or may not have an issue following him 100% in the future if he were to become the starter.
But it doesn't change the fact that he wanted the playing time earlier in the year, Orgeron gave it to him... and now we are left with no scholarship QB for a bowl game.
It's Orgeron and Nuss that you should be mad at, in that order, for using up his 4 games. Not the NCAA- as much as it galls me to say it.

Then what? Start for 4 years?
If he couldn’t beat out Max, he isn’t going to beat out Brennan then sure isn’t going to beat out Howard.
He is quitting on the team as the STARTING QUARTERBACK.

It’s as ideal as it gets if he wants a shot to start at LSU.
Of course, I think he’s already decided to transfer.
