Not perfect by a longshot. However, the defense is doing what they can considering how the injury situation. In time, they will come around. This break couldn't have come at a better time. Injuries happen and there is damned little about it. Back in the days when offenses were traditionally more run oriented you didn't see as much of this. Now players are bigger, faster, and stronger. Really comes as no surprise.

I'm just going to place this here for the Positigers to make excuses for and the Negatigers to bitch about...

LSU D team rankings:

tied 70th Ints for
tied 65th fumbles forced
tied 26th sacks for
56th scoring D
tied 62nd tackles for loss
55th 3rd down completion % against
48th pass efficiency defense

I don't get it.

We're 4-0 with an offense the likes of which we've never seen. People need to quit stressing and just enjoy the ride. These moments are rare.

This thread is about the defense and while the O has played lights out, I'm a little concerned about the D as well.

You don't think at some point we will run into a D that slows us down? Then what...if we can't stop them as well?

This implies people are not capable of enjoying this 4-0 start while still being observant of our perceived (valid or not is arguable) flaws.

Who has a defense good enough to “slow us down” while also having an offense capable of putting up at least 40 points on us? I don’t see anyone on our schedule that has that. Bama. That’s it. And that game will be a shootout. The defense that manages to get a turnover or two will win that game.

I don’t think it’s fixable talent issues back ups aren’t as good.

We can't solely rely up the offense to score whenever we need one. Just like in the past we couldn't rely upon the defense to hang on to the game for us. We need both to perform at a high level when we face the tough competition.

With the likes of Bama, AU, and UF run games, the DL and LB run defense is worrisome. The up the middle run attacks really get LSU and it was that way last season as well. The tackling does need to get better and not having DW is really apparent.

With that said, when they needed a stop or make a 4th down or goal line stand, they have been great.

One thing I noticed with Vandy, the 1st possession they ran off tackle for big gains and then they stopped running up the middle. They tried getting around the corner and that is something LSU is excellent at. They pursuit on wide plays is excellent. Not sure why Vandy stopped attacking up the middle. Was it an LSU adjustment that made Vandy think it wouldn't be successful but for some reason they stopped attacking up the middle.

Anywho...the DL and LB's need to improve in the run defense and getting QB pressure. The secondary....I'm not worried about them at all and Stingley is unreal.

They're not in shaped, undisplined , and not coached well...our defenses haven't been well coached since Nick Saban

Our defense may require too much thinking, a situation we've experienced in the past. We recruit football players not rocket scientists.

Our tackling problems are frustrating, especially when we appear to arrive off balance and out of control.

We had the codes the last few years, Delpit for example has missed more tackles this year than all of last season. No one wondering where the codes are we just want the fire under them to go make the tackle without fail

The score could have been 66-0 and people on here would still find something to complain about.

But it wasn't, it was 66-38.

Yes, 14 pts given up by the offense (which is a bit worrisome, considering we face better D's down the road), but that still means 24 pts allowed to a team that got 6 against UGA.

The defense seems to be able to make individual plays, and it seems to provide stops to allow the offense to separate. But once the score is comfortable, the defense seems to get bored and check out. Hopefully some of that is playing for strips and INTs instead of the sure tackle (something that can be adjusted in tighter games), but too many times out of place, and too many missed tackles.

People keep saying "it's alright", but we saw that come back and bite Alabama in the arse. They couldn't blow Clemson out, and then the sloppy tackling made for an ugly final score. I don't want to see that happen to this LSU team.

Defense is wet newspaper. Onjective people can see the same old season play out with the annual loss (who knows if it will be a blowout or a nailbiter though) to alabama and subsequent losses to at least two more teams after that. Losing to alabama has a way of making LSU quit for the rest of the season, once a championship is out of play.
Alabama is going to make life harder on joe burrow. Saban always keys on the opposing teams biggest star. (Tebow, Fournette, etc etc)

If the defense doesn’t do something fast this season will be the same ol 10-2, 9-3, and an outback bowl or cap one or something.

It’s a shame in college football you have to win so much to get into the playoff, when the nfl you can lose several and still get in.

Part of the problem I think is the mentality of the defense. They sed to be the rock we had to lean on to win games. They used to have to carry the game until the offense got going. Now they have an offense that can put up 40,50, 60 points in a game. That attack mentality seems to have subsided a little which leads to a comfort zone which leads to mental mistakes. My biggest problem is tackling especially open field. It's as if they were never taught to break down which is what you have to do in the open field. I am by no means the sky is falling kind of guy. That can be fixed but that us against the world defensive mentality we used to have needs to get lit again in my opinion. We'll see how they play when the games are closer which they will be when we play the likes of auburn, alabama, florida.

Yall are going to have a ton of crow to eat when this season is over. Aranda will have the defense ready when it's time. Better start dieting now!
