Once West Virginia reduced its deficit to six points, the LSU defense stiffened. The Mountaineers got no closer than the Tigers' 43 and ran just two plays in LSU territory the rest of the game. Smith was just 7-of-13 for 58 yards after West Virginia pulled within six points.

Essentially what Lou Holtz said on Gameday Final. Said he doesn't care how many yards a team throws for if they can't run it consistently. If you can't run the ball, you will get beat on a regular basis by the good teams.

The good think about this is, that we will get to settle it on the field.

the 400+ passing yards we gave up????

We won on the road by 26 over a NR team and that's all that really matters, but I can't say I have no concern over giving up 463 yds passing and 23 1st downs by the pass.

I understand the flow of the game dictated West V to throw the ball, but 463 yds is going to catch the eye of any team/coach/fans we still must play.

The defense had a bad 3rd quarter as far as givng up 2 big pass plays and 2 TDs. They settled down in the 4th. We knew they would have 300 yards passing just by the nature of their offense.

I'd be much more concerned with our shitty tackling than passing D. After rewatching, I'm pretty sure I counted 17 missed tackles by Claiborne alone.

This coaching staff sets up game plans to win the game... not to be ranked highly in statistics. If the high stats ranking accompanies the victory, great. But playing against a team like WVU, we had a great game plan.

First - win field position battle and force them to drive the distance of the field - Check.

Second - Don't give up big plays, and force them to perfectly execute a dink and dunk offense that needs 12 to 13 well-executed plays to score (they had 14 or 15 drives, and only had three scoring drives). When they don't execute perfectly, make them pay - Check.

Third - Control the ball on offense, run the ball and use play action to our advantage - Check.

Fourth - Special teams is a phase of the game that most teams don't seem to realize is an important aspect of the game. Dominate special teams - Check.

We could have played better in all phases of the game. But our game plan was certainly not to "hold them to xxx amount of yards". The game plan was to force them to be perfect on every play if they want to score.

This is probably fair. Missed tackles on first contact (we did some of this against Oregon too btw).

We dropped a few sure interceptions too. Both of these contributed to their net yards passing.

Field position. They consistently started inside the 20, sometimes inside the 10 yard line. Thats a lot of field to cover, and they did a few times with some big plays. LSU sarted at their own 40 or better for the most part. WVU's punting game sucked horribly, think i remember hearing about a 14 yard punt or something. Brad Wing is the real deal. He is a serious weapon that shines in games like this. The defensive coaches, and the secondary needs to use this game as a learning experience. They made some fantastic highlight real plays that overshadowed some pretty bad coverage and tackling. To allow a team to pass 60+ times, for slighlty more than 50% completion ain't too bad. the YAC was the killer. all this and still win by 4 scores!? All the other teams can suck it...it's LSU's time, again!

although it may be disturbing to see so many yards passing, i think it was just an result of our scheme used once we were up by such a large margin.

Big plays were what WV would have needed to have a chance at pulling off the comeback, and we simply were't going to give them the chance to throw the deep ball on us.

Our special teams play was making them go the full length of the field to get the score, so we can afford to give up a lot of yards without giving up quick, easy scores that they needed.

Our 3rd quarter offense was not sustaining drives, and that is the only reason WV got as close as they did on the scoreboard. Props to WV defense for that.

The 'Bama fans are morons in the area of football knowledge. They don't deserve the coaching staff they have if that's their level of sophistication about game planning for a different style of offensive opponent.

to be fair, some of our fans yesterday stated that Florida and Alabama would copy the WVU offense since we've been "exposed".

Plus, we dropped TWO sure thing interceptions on one of their TD drives. I haven't gone back and counted all of the interception drops we had in that game, but I've seen 5-6 listed several times.

Catch the interceptions, don't miss open field tackles, catch easy touchdowns. This game goes from a 26 point victory to a 47 point victory (subtract 2 Tds for WV & add 1 Td for LSU). These players aren't going to play perfectly every play of every game. But they left 21 points on the board and STILL won by 26.... against a ranked opponent that will likely win a BCS conference.

Why does everyone try to focus on the negatives? This team is legit and the positives should be overwhelming.

Its called whistling through the graveyard. Any team that throws the ball 65 times is going to wrack up some yards outside the 20 yard line. But the field shortens and becomes easier to defend and all those yards translate into FG's or turnovers.
The final score tells the whole story.
