re: Who was the best Defensive Coordinator LSU has ever had?

quote:I sure as hell didn't say that! I was responding to the guy that brought up his name. I'd have traded House for someone like Chavis in a heartbeat. He at least understands the college game well. We'd have another national championship. And there were plenty of DEs that looked good under Chavis.
He doesn’t belong anywhere near the conversation of best DC’s at LSU

Maybe he wasn’t ready to be a DC at the time, but his short tenure was marred by a lame duck head coach and a team that checked out too.
So this makes him the best DC LSU has ever had?
Where was he the DC before LSU?

He’s the defensive passing game coordinator for the Vikings.
You realize this isn't really a thing? It is a made up title to make someone feel good.
The weird cult follow ppl have here for this guy is amazing. I could see if he had accomplished something but he hasn't

No doubt. An even better measure than that is victory. But anytime coaches are discussed this way, some are talking about overall success and some are talking about Xs and Os. It leads to arguing that is more about misunderstanding than it is about disagreement. This phenomenon is what led Voltaire to say, “If you want to converse with me, first define your terms.”

As for Arky, there were 13 NFL players on that roster, chief among them Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Nobody stopped those guys. They ran riot over the entire SEC.
Arkansas was 8-5 that year, 4-4 in conference. They lost to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl.
If the clock hadn’t hit all zeroes they’d still be running on Pelini’s D.

Chavis won’t get the credit he deserves because of 2013 with DJ Welter and how he left to A&M
Chief is a quality dude. He doesn’t get enough credit for the turnaround that happened in 2014, either.

Aranda isn't getting enough credit.
2016: 2nd in SP+ defensive
2017: 8th
2018: 22
2019: 17
2019 and 2018 were thinner talent-wise and had injuries. When healthy 2019 shut down a statistically elite OU offense and more or less locked up clemson in the second half of the title game
Saban/boom is clearly 1, chavis is probably two for 10/11 but Aranda was pretty damn good at LSU.
He is sure as shite better the Bo was. Bo inherited some loaded defense at LSU

Just don't ask who was the worst ot this place will stroke out. Lots of very sensitive people around here.

I say Saban

correct.
#1 D in 2003 saban and willie B.
pellini had the #3 D in 05, 06 07.
chavis had the #2 D in 2011.
aranda kept the PPG low like steele did at auburn. they did not focus as much on yards as PPG.

Charles Y. McClendon.
He couldn’t have cared less about offense but he knew his defense.
If you thought Les Miles was stubborn about offense, good ol Charley Mac took the cake.

Definitely overrated. Our defense got better after he left.

Nah Aranda should be up there in top 3-4 at least. Muschamp was good but not without Saban.
Posted on 5/9/25 at 10:50 am to TigerMan327
Yes but how good was he without Saban? He didn’t do well on his own after that. Look at when he was at South Carolina. He’s also Co-DC at Georgia. If he was so good, they wouldn’t need two DC.
Posted on 5/9/25 at 10:52 am to Fat Bastard
Steele also coached at LSU as DC under Miles.
Posted on 5/9/25 at 10:55 am to Fat Bastard
Also, you’re forgetting the game has changed. With spread offenses and elite passing games, it’s made it difficult to keep the PPG low even for schools like Georgia with elite defenses.

Nick Saban with Will Muschamp was a fun combo
#1 Defense. 11 PPG Allowed. 250 YPG. ELITE

he did well as DC at texas and auburn.
willie B is not HC material. we knew that after the failure in gainesville. why did SC hire him is mind blowing.

This is correct. Saban and Arnsparger were the best defensive minds, and I think you add Cholly under the same rationale. Some of those 60s Ds were absolutely smothering albeit in a far different and less aggressive offensive era. But his Ds were really still very good even in his lean years. Who can ever forget the infamous 3-0 affair with Bama in ‘79?
Also, without Aranda, 2019 looks a lot more like 2023 than 1958, so he deserves his props as well.

arnsparger was good in NFL also with giants, miami's no name defense and with the chargers, but that was a different time.
at LSu we basically never blitzed then and played a basic 3-4 defense, with some nickel and dime as needed i am sure. i remember the 3-4 well.
saban is a master of blitz packages
