So FALSE on TM. The fact that they DID punt TO him at the END of the season is why we beat Arkansas and Georgia (SEC-CG). He was almost a non-factor prior to that. Sure handed and good decisions but no WOW! moments until the end of the season.

Ok, so Peterson was so good early that he got limited opportunities late in the season. And Mathieu was average early, giving him the opportunity to some great things late in the season.

How anyone can call one or the other hands down the best is a mystery to me. 3 yards, that's the only difference. Unless someone wants to go advanced metrics and see what average kick length and average starting field position for each returner.

Not to knock TM7 but he had 3 good punt returns in his career. PP7 was better.

They both played 1 year at punt return. I've already done this but I'll do it again.

Peterson 26 PR 418 yards 2 TDs 16.08 avg
Mathieu 27 PR 421 yards 2 TDs 15.59 avg

Minus TDs
Peterson 24 PR 271 yards 11.29 avg
Mathieu 25 PR 267 yards 10.68 avg

That is not that much of a difference at all guy.

The major difference is in conference (and more importantly, 2 crucial games for each).

Out of Conference
Peterson 11 PR 308 yards 2 TDs 28 avg
Mathieu 9 PR 102 yards 11.33

Conference
Peterson 15 PR 110 yards 7.33 avg
Mathieu 18 PR 319 yards 2 TDs 17.72 avg

Both of them did the tops of their damage against two opponents each.

While I obviously see Peterson as the best LSU KR in the past 5 years, both Mathieu and Peterson were pretty damn even when it came to returning punts. PP7 and TM7 would rank 5th and 6th this year respectively, and even without the two TDs, both would rank 13th and 15th respectively.

struggling at what exactly?

Uh, generating any freaking offense. Did you not watch that UGA game?

We were down 10-0 late second quarter against UGA and had 12 yards total offense. Badger turned that game around with his first punt return for a TD. His second punt return was even better.

Im just asking what you were referring to. Let's all calm down for a second. I didnt know if you meant struggling at punt returns or what.

yes. I was the one who started the thread and said good things about Mathieu, referring to those 2 punts.

TM7- 27/421yd 15.6 2 TD

Trindon- 43/647yd 15.0 2 TD

Pretty amazing how close the top 3 guys are statistically. All 3 are badasses and I would take any of them.

My vote goes to TM7. Dude was electric once the ball touched his hands.

The Arkansas one was so awesome because of the view i had from the student section. The second the ball was punted you can tell the lane was there. I remember clear as day saying he was gone before the bowl even got to him.

Matthieu was the very best punt returner that I've seen at any school. Reactionary instincts and coordination were flat out amazing and yes similar to the great Barry Sanders.
PP- great vision , speed and a knack for visualizing the kickoff coverage. The best i can remember at LSU but several others over the years were in his class as a KO returner.

I'm hoping we put Jackson at the top of that list in a few years!

You really just sold me even more towards Mathieu.

He produced against TOP competition when it mattered Most..

That definitely sold me over and means more to me than Peterson's more inflated numbers against inferior competition.

it a difference in opportunity.

lets sat we both hit hit 20 HRs in a season
but i hit 20 in my first 25 at bats and teams just start walking me like crazy
You just don't hit and then go nuts in the last 25 at bats of the season

Same results, but at least you got pitched to for an entire season.

They just started sky punting to PP7 at a certain point. he got very few chances to make real returns.

TM7 had opportunities, he just did nothing with them till the last game of the regular season.

skylar green was more under saban than miles. PP7 was the better overall returner. Tyrann made 2 big plays that will out him close to PP7 but peterson was still better.
