If Ed O wins 2 national titles these next 5 years, would he be considered the greatest coach in LSU football history?

It’s Nick Saban and it’s not close. He took a team that had won 7 games in the previous 2 seasons combined, who had just gone through the worst decade in school history and turned it into what we have now status wise. He won as many SEC and national titles in 5 seasons as Miles did in 13 and he has the highest SEC win pct in program history. He left Miles with 33 NFL players including the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th overall NFL Draft pics along with other 1st rounders, All-Pro and Pro Bowl players. People may hate him because he left but he didn’t leave LSU for Alabama and when he wanted to come back our leadership refused.

You have the only common sense post of all mentioned. Whether we all like or dislike Saban/Miles, their records & achievements speak for themselves. Without Sabans hiring, Lsu would have been the South Carolina in the West div.

Saban inherited a mess when he arrived here.

He satabalized things and made LSU fertile for winning at a high level and made the national title attainable again.

He's the best college coach of all time and LSU is still reaping the benefits of what he created.

Saban... he was stupid to leave and we were stupid not to take him back....
I wasn't his biggest fan when he was here and I heard his players either liked him or thought he was an a-hole..
However he did turn the tigers into a national contender...thankfully he was not another curly hallman the darkest years in LSU football history...
BUT MY ALL TIME FAVORITE TIGER COACH WAS CHARLIE MAC...MAY HE RIP...

no

DINARDO inherited a mess, and "brought back the magic". He made the team back into a consistent bowl team, after Hallman turned LSU into what Tennessee is currently (hadn't had a winning season since 88, a six year stretch).
He didn't get to Atlanta, but tied for the SEC West in 96 (10-2)and 97 (9-3). They won bowls in 95, 96, and 97.

Saban took over in 2000, after Dinardo stumbled, but the program wasn't destroyed when he came. It needed to be reorganized, which he did.

Like others have said, Saban is probably the best coach, Miles the most successful.

he could have done way better if he wasn't so hard headed..............

Exactly! Probably the most successful coach in LSU history. Won 1 NC and played for another. It's mind-boggling to think what saban could have done had he stayed at LSU, but.... Really could say the same for Dietzel. Cholly Mac had some great years early on, just couldn't win that 1 more game to win it all. Obviously the best coach was saban, not the most successful, but history proves he was the best. I'm really hoping Ed O surpasses saban and Miles in success. He will never be mentioned as being a better coach, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be more successful. HC's don't really coach, they hire the coaches and manage teams, motivate and recruit. They make sure other coaches are coaching and getting the job done.

Nick Saban came into a program that was a complete disaster. Not sure how you can even compare the two.

To date: Saban. Given where he started, and where the organization as a whole has gone since he came along, he is the best Coach/CEO to have come along.

Currently: Ed O has a good thing going, bringing an old-school mentality to the current times, putting players in a system that really can prepare them for the NFL, specifically QBs. Time will tell.

Nick Saban... all he did was change the trajectory of a struggling program which now with Os recruiting is almost back to elite level. Emmert and Saban get my vote...

On a side note, Orgeron has a chance to have back to back double digit winning seasons. That would make him only the second coach in LSU history to do so.

They play as many as 15 games now. It used to be a maximum of 12. Even a poor season results in an extra game these days.
