Drizz I agree somewhat but for LSU to win games in those days Pete had to score 40. Also remember he didn't have the 3 pt line. I saw a few years ago where someone charted his shots for a single season I believe his senior year and if 3s were part of the game he would have averaged 8 more points a game so like 52 not to mention that I am sure several long 2's he shot then he would have been cognizant of the 3 point line and took a step or two back to make it a 3. So you could probably say 55 easy. I am not discounting Jackson but if I have to pick between Pete and CJ it is Pete all day long. 6-5 versus 6 ft and a much better passer.

It was pretty much designed to showcase Pete not necessarily to produce a great team. An elder statesmen on the board may be able to expand or debunk that narrative.

It was to a degree, but Pete was basically a one man team. The other guys didn't know whether he was passing to them or not... I remember the story of Press driving Pete to school and making him dribble the ball through the window all the way there.......... He was Magic before Magic without the same talent around him OR a three point line.........Just think about a player in todays game avg. 44 ppg for just ONE year... Now to have it done 3 times is unreal... A record that will never even be sniffed at ANY level..........

I agree with all of that, both you and peej, and I was aware of the lack of 3 point line - stated it earlier in thread.

I guess my question to you guys or anyone around back in the day, did LSU try to assemble other key players on Pete's teams or was it just a given that this is Pete's show? I've watched the highlights that are available these days and he was remarkable - one of a kind, never will be matched. I'm just less read on the inner-workings surrounding that time and most of my knowledge was passed down from my dad and uncles who were around those days.

Let's just all agree on these 4: Pistol Pete, Shaq, Pettit & CJ. Too many choices for the 5th spot, in fact, you could probably pick a different player every night of the week for it...

Blanton and redding was my favorite pair of over achievers, just thinking of redding brings tears to my eyes ! best Over achievers would make a good subject for the board !

Macklin helped put LSU back on the map and he was a very good player, but he lacked a good offensive game which is why he didn't last long in the NBA. Obviously John Williams ate his way out of the NBA, but I think some of you may be overlooking what an incredibly talented and smooth player he was.

Stanley Roberts should easily be in the top 10 all-time LSU players, but.

Shaq
CJ
Maravich
Pettit
Oliver Brown

Yeah, Brown is totally random. I wanted a defensive specialist. I could've just as easily picked Bernard Woodside.

Can't argue w any of this and prob how I would have them too. Vernel was one of my favs to watch back in the day.

I know ESPN has done these type of things and ranked our all time starting 5 in the top 5 I think. I'd put em up against any.

People are nuts not to surround mega-scorers and defensive liabilities with a lengthy defender who can guard the perimeter like...

Jerry Reynolds

gotta be a reason he played well over a decade in the league

CJ
Maravich
Reynolds
Petit
Shaq

Folks need to do their homework when looking for a SF

Jerry Reynolds totally cements the line-up more so than any other player I've seen

I agree with you on that Williams was a phenomenol player as I said in an earlier post he probably was the most complete player to play at LSU especially at 6ft 8 inches. If you remember when LSU played Georgetown in the famous Jose don't shoot game it was Williams who took the ball upcourt after made baskets not Derrick Taylor because not only was Williams a great ball handler but he was able to throw over the Georgetown trap. I would easily have him as my first guy off the bench due to his versatility he could play 2,3,4 or even 5 in a pinch only thing he lacked was range but as Dick Vitale said from 15 feet in he is the best player in the country.

I still would keep Macklin because he was a great player, I believe the best offensive rebounder ever to play for LSU he was almost impossible to block out. Imagine this Ethan brings it up who kicks it out to Pete on the wing. Shaq on the ball side block so you cant double if Pete kicks it in to him because it leaves Pete open for an easy jumper. If he doesn't shoot or cant get it to Shaq he kicks to Petit at the high post who was money from there and Petit can either shoot, lob to Shaq or drive and you have Macklin on the weakside block to clean up any missed shots.

Take a bench of Williams, willie sims,CJ, Howard Carter,Dewayne Scales and Greg Cook and Anthony Wilson and I am telling you guys this team would dominate an all UCLA or UNC team

Ice was a good player but was totally eratic from outside of 12 to 14 feet and he wasn't the all around player John Williams was.
