And I saw him play as a freshman against Tulane in New Orleans. Also many times with the Jazz. That’s New Orleans Jazz for you youngsters.

Chris Jackson - Mahmoud Abdul Rauf - also deserves being mentioned in this conversation.

Slight edge to Pete. He was probably greatest college basketball player of all time.

Sorry to disappoint but I was at every home game Pete played, including the freshman team. He was better than people say. It wasn't his scoring as much as it was his ball handling and passes that made him one of the greatest ever. On a modern team he would be a perrenial all star.

I'm not taking away anything from Pete but the statement that "he was all we had",
Certainly that statement was true the first two years Pete played Varsity. Yes, Apple was pretty good and Fig a little less so but Hess barely got in a game when Pete was playing. I didn't know Apple played in the ABA so I looked it up and he only played in 4 games. Danny Hester was actually better than Apple or Fig in Pete's last season. So yes, Pete has some talent around him but compared to the Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana and other elite teams, not very much at all - especially on defense.

Most on this board never saw Pete play.
Shaq was here after Brown had established LSU as a Basketball name.
Pete started/help make the name.

Class of ‘73. Do the math. And before you declare that I am old, I’ll beat you to it and admit that I am old and plan to get much older.

Lore is Pistol. It’s like a story time listening to all the tales of him being a wizard.

Nobody here really saw him play at LSU.

The hell you say. I saw every game he played at the Ag Center.

It’s Pistol Pete by a thousand miles. This one isn’t close. Shaq was a top 10 player in college; Pistol was the best player in the nation. He was must see TV, all over the nation.

Shaq got a lot better after he left LSU, and he went on to have a great pro career, but at LSU it’s not close.

I have to go with Pete. He was a magician on the floor. The shite he could do with a basketball was amazing to watch

Pete did things with a ball that nobody has ever done.

I went to most every home game.

He drove his Dad crazy taking shots from half court. He made a lot of them.

Pete was asked to be a Glodetrotter as well for his ball skills.

I think pistol Pete would be Still very successful in today's Nba But it's hard to ignore the fact that His college numbers were played against All white guys. And I don't mean that about race as much as they're being a lack of competition with multiple types of people playing. Having said that, Pistol Pete was still very good in the NBA but Shaq is literally a top three Center of all time

Oh, I'm not saying they had that kind of talent. I just said it was overstated saying he had nothing, particularly his Senior season. Again, the fact that they went 10-8 in the SEC the year after he left with several of the players from the previous year playing gives some indication.

Yes the SEC was weak and top heavy, but it's all relative. It was weak and top heavy the three years Pete played too.

The entire world knows Shaq.

It’s not just because he’s still here. It’s because he is Shaq.
