There are NCAA rules that allow athletics department officials to help secure policies and there are also funds available at each university that can be used to pay for the insurance policies if the programs want to allocate money for that purpose. The student assistance fund is money provided to every university by the NCAA that can be used for a variety of scenarios to help student-athletes financially for everything from travel for funerals to formula for babies.

The NCAA allows universities to pay for the insurance policies out of this fund, but not every university chooses to do so. Texas A&M, for example, paid $50,000 from this fund to help offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi secure insurance. Butt and his family secured loans to pay for the premium instead of using the student assistance fund at Michigan.

How many former Tigers, whether greats, or just "bodies" have said one of the most emotional days of their lives was the last time they dressed-out and ran into Tiger Stadium?

John-Ed Bradley certainly was melancholy over it in his book It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium. How many other articles or whatever have been written where players have expressed the same thing. Perhaps Devin White is not ready for that day? Perhaps his considerations changed the night of the Rice game when he ran out for, possibly, the last time? and maybe decided, I want these last 8 chances.

Perhaps it was the distaste of the aTm game and the possibility of playing his last home game on what will be a completely electric night AND knowing it will be Senior Night, as well.

Money can buy a LOT in this world, but it can not buy you a moment or a milestone in your life as an athlete.

He's already the best in Tiger history.

Good catch. It looks like it's changed the last few years. I read an article that Leonard and his family took out the policies on himself and that LSU only advised. I guess either LSU or Fournette didn't want to use this money.

I know it's still a tricky business to collect and Lloyd's in particular is embroiled in several legal cases because they declined to payout benefits to athletes who made claims.

If he comes back he certainly could make a strong push for that claim.

Shoot, after winning the Butkus this year and a consensus AA, one more season like that it would be hard to argue against him being the best we've ever had.

You ever him talk? Dude could be a professor.. probably getting a business and finance double major so once he gets his NFL earnings he's going to Quintuple his investments.

Dude is smart on and off the field with the best team attitude you could have from a Star player. He legitimately seems like the type of guy who if you saw him at a restaurant and you were to afraid to bother him and ask for a picture, he would come up to you and would take one.

If he goes the PP7 route and reps LSU nonstop, he will be my favorite Tiger of all time. (Started watching in 01)

Money is good, but you only get one chance to be a legend.

Whatever he decides won't change my opinion of him. He's a hell of a player and a person.

No way he stays nor should he. First rounders should always go. I have a problem with the Dupre's and others who go pro and either are late rounders or go undrafted. If you're not a first rounder you should stay and finish out and try to move up.

If I were Devin I would skip the Fiesta Bowl.

I think White is going for immortality. Money can't buy your name talked about for decades and longer.

Why do you hate LSU?

Why do you, some dinkus behind a keyboard, think you know whats better for DW than he does.

I just cant understand how a fan of LSU would say the best player on the team should leave.

Ahhh. That's something we didn't think of. That people from North Louisiana are pillars of moral virtue untainted by the disease of greed and interest in wealth that emanates from south Louisiana, which has been called the Manhattan of the Southeastern US.

Yep. That's exactly what I said. You nailed it.

Holy hyperbole, Batman!

quote:

But he doesn't have to do that to cement his place as one of, perhaps the best LB to have every played at LSU.

Based on some of his recent comments, I'm thinking he doesn't want to leave any doubt about that.

If you leave now, there's a 100% chance that he'll be talked about as arguably, one of the best the ever play linebacker at LSU.

If he stays another year, there's a 95% chance that he'll be talked about as undeniably, the best linebacker to ever play at LSU.

Regardless of who you are you still need some degree of income to live.

Some people don't want or need that kind of money to live. Some people are perfectly okay living a humble lifestyle and the extra money wouldn't necessarily be buying any extra happiness.

quote:

Even if he comes back to school, eventually he's going to have to earn a living in some form or fashion. This kid has an opportunity RIGHT NOW to earn more money than 99% of the people on this board will ever earn in their lifetimes.

I don't understand this 'either/or' proposition that everybody keeps presenting. It's not like if he comes back he's never going to see that money ever again. It will still be there waiting for him in 2020.

Sure, he could get hurt but the chance of that happening are fairly slim and the chance of it being a career-ending injury are even slimmer.

quote:

Now, assuming he stays healthy, he will have that opportunity again next season. But that obviously comes with significant risk.

No. The potential loss is significant but the risk itself is not that significant because the chances of him having a career-ending injury in one season of college football aren't very high.

quote:

While it may be little tougher decision for him than most, I think he leaves (and NO ONE will, or should, fault him for that).

Wouldn't surprise me at all if he did leave but if he came back it would cement his legacy. I certainly wouldn't fault him for leaving and it wouldn't change my opinion of him one bit. But man. If he was to come back? You talking about legendary status. No amount of money can buy that.
