Popularity is different than "liking one more than the other"

but hundreds of thousands of people through the years went to school and graduated from LSU

And Many more thousands didn't and are Saints fans. Also, we're talking about Louisiana. Many LSU grads are from out of state or have left the state.

I agree with you 100% on that count. As a third generation LSU grad I grew up with a deep rooted devotion to this school that's only surpassed by devotion to family. I doubt if any Saints fan could match the reverence LSU people have for the school.

That said, the Saints are more popular statewide than LSU IMHO.

Certainly, one of the best posts and most thought out in this entire thread.

Plus there are football fans everywhere who consider the NFL as the only place football is played and couldn't care less about the college game.

Its the Saints.

Unless things have changed, much of the states population aren't Saints fans. The Saints aren't La. LSU is La. It's probably not the slam dunk some think it is for the Saints.

LSU. Don't care much about the Saints. Would pull for the Steelers over them.

Curley Hallman was the coach of LSU my freshman year and you could get football tickets for a few bottle caps, some pocket lint, and a half chewed Skittle.

You could get into a saints game for damn near nothing and people still didn't go.

Oh, and you have your years mixed up. Tiger Stadium didn't have an upper deck until 6 years after Curley Hallman left LSU.

Most popular NFL team by Facebook likes. Not exactly scientific, but it shows they are very much popular throughout LA.

tv viewership

There's a 50/50 chance on any given sunday that the Saints game is the only game on TV at that time on Sunday. Not to mention people who play fantasy football and are just honestly football fans will watch the game. I couldn't care less about the saints, but I watch damn near every game because I generally have fantasy players playing and enjoy watching football. Compare that with saturdays and when LSU is playing there is potentially 3 or 4 games on TV at any given time. Of course tv viewership is going to be higher for Saints games.

I bet this is a lot closer than you think.

Go figure, the most popular NFL team in the state is the Saints.

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly call facebook a great method of determining popularity.

There's no doubt its the most popular NFL team within the borders of La, no one is disputing that. But unless the super bowl win changed a lot of hearts, the area I grew up wasn't solid Saints by any stretch.

Is it LSU or tSaint's?

This a really good question. I would say LSU. From what I see the Saints have more band wagon fans.

That's because the veiwing area for the Saints includes not only almost all of Louisiana but a large part of Mississippi and Alalbama.

They both sell a lot of merchandise. The Saints led the NFL in merchandise sales in 2010 and have been top 3-5 since. LSU is usually top five among colleges.

Bottom line, Louisianans love to deck themselves out in football jerseys.

Yes they do. TThe Saints have more. A couple of more seasons like last year and the Saint's wagon will be empty.

Facebook says its the saints and it's not even close.

Saints - 2.9 million likes
LSU - 760k likes
LSU football - 250k likes

I understand people outside of LA can like the Saints but the same can be said about LSU.
