re: Where does Kevin Gausman rank on your all-time LSU pitchers list?

I love the kid, but he's not even top 10 IMO.
Came in and was a weekend starter from the time he walked onto campus then became the all-time winningest pitcher in LSU baseball program history. Lost a defacto game 3 in the CWS in Omaha. If LSU wins that game I think it puts him and Lange in this list. Had to pick one of the two and I picked Poche because he had an overall better career at LSU than Lange

There is a big difference between arms and pitchers. A lot of great arms are lousy pitchers. Poche was an outstanding college pitcher.
Ok, he's nowhere near the top 5 pitchers we've had come through here either. We've had a lot of outstanding pitchers here. Most of them just didn't stay here all 4 years like Poche did to accumulate the wins he did.
Nola, Guasman, McDonald, Skenes, Lange, Ogea, Byrd, Sirotka, Coleman, Ranaudo, Ainsworth, Yarnall, Peever, Schutz, Leskanic, and Springer were all better college pitchers than Poche.
Poche never made an All-SEC team or All-American team in his career. His only accolade of that nature was being a freshman All-American. He was never the ace of any staff he was on. Hard to be a top 5 all-time pitcher here with that being the case.

He was the Friday night starter the year they made it to the CWS final in 2017. Is the Friday night starter not the ace?

He didn't have a better overall career than Lange. The only statistical metric he led Lange in was career wins (39 to Lange's 30), and he pitched one additional season. Lange had a sub 3.00 career ERA. Poche didn't. Lange had 100+ more Ks in 3 years than Poche did in 4. Lange had a career .222 OppBA. Lange was a 2x AA

Except He wasn't the Friday starter in 2017. Go back and look at the box scores from 2017 if you don't believe me. They're readily available

Gausman doesn't sit in LSU's top 5 only because he didn't stay here long enough. If he did he easily would've been a top 5 pitcher. It really sucks we couldn't keep him longer than we did.
Poche was a warrior and had that dawg in him but he definitely wasn't a top 5 pitcher. You could maybe have an argument for him in the tier 2 discussion for LSU pitchers.

If you guy by "stuff", Gausman is as good as anyone we've had. If you go by career, I don't think he is top-5.

Jared Foster always gave off movie villain or basic bully vibes. Always felt like he probably started a lot of fights against frat kids that he knew he could beat the shite out of over dumbshit like "disrespect".
Mikie was the complete opposite. Dude was humble, nice and literally volunteered at the Catholic Church on campus. Just a really humble, good dude. I was a year behind him too so I met him after he had the big hit in 09. He was a great guy. His girlfriend was fricking bad too. Smoke show.

I'd also like to nominate Lane Mestepey

“I just love Jared Bradford.”
Edit: For context, Bradford isnt in my top 10, but he was pretty damn good. Also, ole Paul Mainieri just loved saying the quote I said above.

This thread is fun. Nobody has mentioned guys like Nate Bumstead… he’ll never be mentioned in the top tiers, but he was a guy that could go out and compete and eat up innings. There are some forgotten guys from the Smoke years.
I don’t think Jason Determann has been mentioned, but he was a quality lefty, never great but always good.
The reason LSU is what it is has to do with badass players, and we have been lucky to watch some excellent pitching.

Gausman is 5-3 right now with a 2.63 era and leads the AL in strikeouts w 113
"Jeremy Peña and Alex Bregman each whiffed three times against Gausman, who gave up one run and four hits, striking out five of the final six batters he faced. The right-hander didn’t issue a walk, the fourth time this season he’s done that."
“For me, the no walks is more important to me than the 13 strikeouts,” Gausman said. “I’m just out there trying to make good pitches. I made a lot of good pitches with two strikes.”
pssst, hullo lsu pitchers

We only had Gausman for two years and I don't remember it being a dominant fr year
This is by far his best MLB season to date
Not sure why the Orioles gave up on him to begin with
More a case of the Orioles in rebuild mode...moving players that were high salary or arbitration eligible or valuable trade pieces for building block prospects with an eye toward the future. Hated seeing the O's trade both Gausman and Bundy then struggle through the next several seasons with nothing but rag arms in the rotation, but seeing what has come out of the other end of the sell-off has been worth it.

Agree. I like the OP’s list except for Porche at #5. And I don’t think there is a right answer for who is #1 out of Ben & Nola. You could make an argument for either and have plenty of data points to back you up. If you are just looking at stats, I would say Nola. But I remember how dominant Ben was before he ran out of gas at the end of his Jr year. He threw 152 innings. Almost 40 more than Nola. And I remember how Ben was regarded by MLB scouts. He was being compared to guys like Clemens and Gooden. This is thrown around too often but he was regarded as a generational propect.
