0% chance of him leaving Ames for a downgrade. But in the immortal words of the great Michael Scott: “‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.’ - Wayne Gretzky”

Byington at Vandy is a miracle worker. What he's done with the 'Dores this year, after the wreakage of last year's 9-20, 4-14 disaster is the stuff that dreams are made of.
Thats what they said about Missouri's coach two years ago then last year happened. Same with South Carolina last year, this year not so much. Maybe reserve judgement on coaches for at least four years and lets see where things stand.

Iowa state has also had a decent program for a while, (a few terrible years sprinkled in) so it’s not like he would be leaving a bad place. They’ve apparently had enough resources to win where they are at. LSU needs to step up their basketball investment if they want to attract legitimate coaches in the future. They got lucky Mulkey had Louisiana tied and wanted to return home. There’s not going to be a men’s equivalent to that once McMohan is fired.

The investment it would take to hire someone like that and build facilities akin to Auburn and the like
Why do we want to build a band box for 10,000 fans like Auburn They are drawing 13,000 to 14,000 fans for gymnastics and women's basketball and will approach the same when McMahon gets the program fully rolling. If he doesn't and is replaced the first call is to Billy Donovan and determine what it takes to lure him back to the college game.

I think another guy LSU could consider is Chris Beard. He didn't go to Ole Miss because he had a burning desire to live in Oxford. He had no other choice. He's not long for Ole Miss if the right job, and BIG money come calling. Is LSU enough of an upgrade? Maybe.
Of course, Beard may be to Texas fans what Wade is to (sensible) LSU fans. Beard didn't want to leave Texas. He was fired in the wake of "scandal" which ultimately turned out to be much ado about nothing (at least with respect coaching basketball). Texas made the classic mistake of retaining the interim HC following a really good season (with Beard's team) despite the fact that coach (Terry) had been a mediocre HC at two different stops prior. To the surprise of no one, Texas is backsliding from where they were headed with Beard. Just like Wade though, both Beard and Texas would have to bury egos and hard feelings to make it work. But I promise you...Texas fans want him back!

11-7 SEC - NCAAT Round of 32
0-18 SEC
5-2 SEC #20
to
2-16 SEC
9-9 SEC - NIT 1st Round
1-5 SEC
Laughable. Dude is going to make the NCAAT 2 of 3 years while CMM will make 1 NIT in 3 years. But, but give him 4 years... so he can go 0fer 4.

I think with Beard Indiana is a spot to lookout for. He’s a Bobby Knight guy and Woodson is supposedly retiring after this season and would probably be fired if he didn’t so watch out for them to make a play for Beard. What about Mic Cronin, good coach, hard nosed and appears to be tired of UCLA’s BS.

He seems to be tired of college basketball altogether. He's basically telling everyone associated with the program, players, assistants, the towel boys, etc that they are a bunch of lazy pussies who don't want to work. How well that tactic will constantly play in the NIL era is questionable.

We don’t need to build a new arena but need to renovate the PMAC and build a modern basketball practice facility with the extras like the one we have for baseball.

At least both Dennis Gates, Lamont Paris and now Byington have had one successful SEC season with a NCAA tournament bid (I believe both Vandy and Mizzou will make it this year).
Coach McMahon has nothing to hang his hat on, and never will at LSU. It seems the program is getting further from achieving lofty (or even medium height) goals.

That’s what I mean by UCLA specifically. It’s known that typically the guys you get over there aren’t keen on playing the way Cronin wants to play. Same thing happened with Howland he just didn’t handle it the way Cronin is.

Why would we hire another mid major coach? Look at McMahon. I think Scott will go after a bigger name(ACC, Big 10 or Big 12 coach) especially with us not having sanctions/penalties.

Coach McMahon has nothing to hang his hat on
CoachMc hasn't shown he can win at this level at all.
The other coaches used in the argument have won, regressed, and possibly are back at it.

quote:Mid-Majors in general aren't hands off. There are 350+ D-I MBB coaches. It's often a crap-shoot, but if you identify and get the right one you're good.
Why would we hire another mid major coach?
Coaches don't generally start at power conferences unless they already have relationships, etc. built.

If he did leave it would for be a much bigger job than LSU.
I agree mostly, but our athletic director is the X factor. He might overpay and give inexplicable job security outside of the norm. Anything can happen with Scott Woodward and a contract.

A lot of coaches in the SEC who are elevating and having success are mid major hires.
Oats- Buffalo
Golden- San Francisco
Gates - Cleveland State
Pope- BYU
Byington- James Madison
Moser- Loyola Chicago
