I see a few threads discussing our roster layout, lack of size, turnover issues, poor shooting, and other issues.

There are a ton of posts regarding rebounding and our lack of size being an issue. Honestly, I do not think this will be a huge problem this year. Through 4 games we have out rebounded our opponents 179 to 131 in total rebounds. In the entire season there may only be 3-5 games where we get killed on the glass and down low due to another teams "size". Modern day basketball doesn't revolve around big post players. The game has transitioned to guard heavy line ups with an up and down play style.

I hope that Wade sticks with running a few other defenses. I was happy to see us running some 2-1-2 zone press and falling back to a 2-3 zone. I would like to see us stay aggressive on defense and take a few chances for steals. This team excels when the ball gets moving up and down. We don't fit the mold of a team that wants to grind someone down and score in half court sets.

One of my biggest concerns after the first four games this season is the fact that we have 46 assists and have turned the ball over 82 times. That is absolutely terrible. I honestly thought that Ja'vonte would have done a better job handling the ball against a pressure defense. He has not looked great against pressure defenses. My hope is that Bishop or Mays can be the guys that can handle and facilitate the basketball against pressure. I think Ja'vonte plays better off the ball. Javonte and Watford are both averaging nearly 5 turnovers a game. I get Watfords high turnovers, I think he is pressing to start the season and is trying to do too much. The game will slow down for Watford with the more minutes he gets. IMO, that is why you saw him get 30+ minutes in yesterdays game.

Another concern for me, is the lack of 3pt shooting. Wade talked all off-season and pre-season about how well this team is going to shoot the basketball. Well, we have seen some spurts of good shooting, but overall we are only shooting the 3 ball at 28.6%. To be a great team, we will have to shoot the ball better. This is a run and gun type team, there will be games this season where we live and die by the 3 ball. Hyatt is 0-9 on the season, the talk all off season is he would be the "sniper". Hopefully he can prove that in the next few weeks, we will need a shooter off the bench.

I picked up on a stat that I honestly thought would be better through the first 4 games. This team is averaging only 6.5 steals per game so far. For comparison, last years team finished right around 10 steals per game. We will have to find ways to turn the opponent over more than this to be great. Wade loves the havoc press style defense, I hope to see more of that in the coming weeks.

Lastly, this just my opinion, not trying to bash these kids in anyway. If we have to play Graves or Cooper for any extended minutes this season, it will not be good for us. Graves can shoot the ball, but he is not an SEC caliber player by any means. If he is getting minutes during SEC play, this will not be a good sign. Same goes for Cooper, I don't think he posses the talent to be an SEC player. These two players may have seen time on a Johnny Jones team, but if we plan to be a top 5 SEC team these two won't be seeing many minutes. Yes, Cooper looked decent in last nights game, but you have to understand the level of competition. There is a reason you haven't seen him get many minutes this season.

Again, these are just my thoughts after the first 4 games. Just like last season, I expect this team to get stronger as the season goes on. Getting Marlon back will be a huge positive going forward. He gives this team more depth and makes them better defensively. I still think this is a top 5 SEC team.

What's the rants thoughts?

TLDR

-Lack of size will not be a huge factor.
-Rebounding is fine so far.
-Stick to pressing/pressure defense/zone looks.
-Assist to turnover ratio is horrific.
-Lack of 3pt shooting a concern.
-Steals per game down.
-Graves & Cooper not SEC caliber.
-Marlon needs to heal up.
-Team is still top 5 SEC.

Without significant improvement, I’m expecting a borderline NCAA tourney team. Anything more than that would be lagniappe.

The lack of a ballhandler, a post presence, and all the turnovers will get us beat. I was pleased with James Bishop and Manning though.

Smart has been the biggest disappointment. He’s really struggled as a PG in terms of just running the offense. But there’s plenty of time for him to get better.

Bishop....I mean I know he’s a freshman but he looks like he’s never played basketball before whenever he gets real minutes. He needs to improve to serviceable very quickly so we don’t have to run Mays and smart into the ground.

Days/Watford/Manning are all very impressive. I see what wade meant. At its peak this team starts 5 guys between 6’4-6’8 who can all handle the ball, defend multiple positions, rebound and shoot threes. We’ve seen it in spurts it’ll just depend on how consistent we can get.

Emmitt looks like he’s 6’9” or 6’10” with the way he plays.

Wouldn’t mind if we could borrow one of USU’s three 7-footers though.

We are going to get killed on the boards come SEC time. We have zero shot blocking as well. I don't subscribe to the "we don't need bigs anymore in todays bball"

Our bigs and size last year were a MAJOR reason we won the SEC. Bigby Williams and Reid blocking shots and keeping balls alive around the rim was massive.

You didn't see the game last night did you? Bishop looked very good.

I think the team improves throughout the year and makes the tourney.

Next year could be another special year.

I agree with the ball handling issues. I hope Bishop and Mays can step up to play the 1 and cut down on the turnovers and also create some better offense by moving the ball around.

I disagree with the post presence. We have done fine rebounding and haven't been killed in the paint yet. I think our bigs create match up issues for other teams. We aren't deep in the post, but i think Days/Watford/Williams is one of the stronger back courts in the SEC. Time will tell though, we haven't played a team with great size yet.

I haven't had the chance to watch them yet, but they definitely have the potential to be top 5 in SEC. I may go to next Friday's game when I'm in town for A&M.
The assist/TO ratio needs lots of work, but with 26 turnovers vs. VCU I'd like to see where we are after several more games and headed into SEC play.

There's no question we'll miss Waters and his handles. That'll be hard to overcome vs. top-notch competition.

Despite our rebounding worries, we seem to be doing well on offensive rebounds, which shows good hustle.

This is against everything Wade does. He doesn't like having a low 7 footer that slows the game down. He would rather have athletes that can get up and down the court. We don't have a team that fits the half court game.

I watched last night until we were up by 20. Bishop had looked terrible in the 5 min he played until that point. So I assume he played well from that point on.

That’s why I said real minutes though. I mean he’s dribbling the ball off his foot out of bounds, dropping passes, throwing passes into the stands, completely leaving his man bc doesn’t understand the defense.

In no way do I think he sucks as a basketball player. I’m confident he’ll become a valuable 3-4 year player. But we’re going to need 15 min a game from him against sec competition.

I agree that size was a major reason we were successful last year. We just have to find other ways to be successful this year. We'll check back at the rebound stats when we get into SEC play. I think you'll be surprised at how even those numbers will be.

Naz Reid had one more block than E Williams last year. Let’s not pretend like he was a rim protector.

I hope so. We should be a very competitive team. I think the turnover mess will eventually work itself out. New team/new way of playing, etc..

I like what I saw from Manning last night. He is going to be a good addition.

I really didn't think that we'd miss Tremont Waters as much as we do. However, teams are going to press us to death without him. Waters could knife through a press then create offense. This year's team has nobody that can do that.

I expected to miss the size of Reid and KBW. While I think we have missed them, it hasn't been a glaring issue. It may rear its head at some point, it may not. VCU targeted the paint, but it was really the turnovers that killed us in that game.

This team will have to improve greatly to vie for the SEC again. I think press break will improve, but it will never be like when Waters was here. It will have to be very methodical and into a half court set. Our half court set leaves something to be desired, though. We need to get better at shooting from range.

I envision a fringe tournament team that, if peaking at the right time, could win a few games in the NCAA bracket.

I would love to see some stats that would lead to the issues of player size. I will have to look them up later.

-points score in the paint
-points given up in the paint
-offensive rebounds given up
-defense/offensive stats from other teams "bigs"

I disagree. As long as we are fundamentally sound, I think we’ll be fine. Days/Williams are arehyper aggressive on the boards and our guards are big and more focused on rebounding this year.

The shot blocking is a concern, but if we can have our guards to commit to staying in front of their man, we can mitigate the need for a shot blocker to an extent

We obviously have issues, but I think there are ways around them. We won’t be able to have the same approach as last season. I think it can be managed though.
