Yeah this is likely where we end up. Which is a pretty good spot.

I simply asked “in a way” who is our best pitcher for next year? “ “closest” thing to Skenes?”

Who is our Friday starter next year =\ whose closest to Skenes.

Ask the correct question to get the correct answer.

Another name to watch could be Quinn Mathews from Stanford

No it was a thread asking who we had that was the closest thing to the best pitcher in LSU history, and one of the best prospects in all of college baseball history. The answer is very obviously nobody. That's why you are getting downvoted.

The closest thing to Skenes. Another way to ask the same question. If you just let your brain work is who is our best pitcher next year? You sir are a fricking moron.

It’s almost impossible to guess a rotation right now but no one will have the year Skenes had. That was a once in a generation season.

Hurd appears to be the front runner for Friday and there will be plenty of options to fill out the rotation. Loer, Jump, and Herring would be my guesses as to who starts the 1st 4 games but way too many moving parts to really know anything right now.

There is never going to be another Paul Skenes but I would expect Hurd to have a very dominant year next year. But in terms of power fastballs then the closest thing would be Chase Burns (if we are able to land him) or Aiden Moffett. If Aiden can command his stuff better hes an elite arm out of the bullpen comes close to 100 and has a very sharp breaking ball. Just didn't have very good command this year.

I'll answer the question with my best guess.

Friday = Hurd
Sat. = Herring
Sun. Ack / Coleman

No clue on the transfers because who knows what they'll pan out like. They're transferring for a reason.

Example: Paul Skenes, Christian Little

Definitely not singling you out but why couldn’t everyone just say Thatcher Hurd?

I believe Shores is also draft eligible as a soph due to age, so similar to Taylor he could get drafted in 24 and move on and may never pitch again for LSU

This makes sense. After so many to comment you’re the first to mention this

It doesn't make sense, because he's 10000% wrong. Nicolas is the boards biggest dumbass. But after reading your thread, I can understand why you would fit right in line with him.

Because your thread asked for the closest thing to Skenes. We don't have anything close to Skenes. If your thread title would have been, "Who are our potential Friday night guys next year?" You would have gotten more Hurd responses.

I'm sure some would have still called you out on:

A- not knowing this
B - not looking at the plenty of other threads that have discussed it

Good post. And I agree with your rotation. Things change but as of today that's where we're at.

Don’t sleep on Christian little.

With a new pitching coach, he may be able to put it together, he has the raw talent and IF (big if) he can put it together, he could be a really good pitcher.

Hurd is certainly the favorite to be the Friday night guy right now. He always had great stuff. Even when he was struggling a bit, he was still projected to be a 1st rounder in next year’s draft, and I’m almost positive he was listed as the top draftable college arm for ‘24. And he really came around and pitched great towards the end of the season. If he can maintain that command and improve just a little (he could improve more than that—that back injury really slowed his development), he could be a Friday night stud.

But, I think Jay is terrified by what happened with Taylor/Shores/Edwards this year. Were it not for guys stepping up and pitching over their heads in the brightest of lights, those injuries may have derailed the season and “wasted,” what may be the best offensive lineup he’ll ever have. He’s gonna collect the best arms he possibly can, let them compete, and see who steps up and what shakes out. Our weekend rotation may wind up being completely different than any of us expect right now.

Not that he hasn’t always tried to have the best arms, but I think you’ll see less guys with lower ceilings like a Dutton or Hellmers on the roster moving forward. I also think he may be more hesitant to take as many guys who come in with pre-existing injuries and the plan of kinda stashing them for a year/year and a half until they get healthy. Because as great as the guys were who pitched in the postseason, we wouldn’t have been able to win in Omaha without a Skenes and that offense. And we likely won’t have either one again ever, much less at the same time. He’ll likely win a couple/few more titles if he stays long enough, but none of those are likely to look anything like this year’s.

Besides seeing how the rotation shakes out, the bullpen will interesting as well. The back end guys will emerge, but I wonder who will wind up being the next Riley Cooper. Probably not good enough stuff to be in the weekend rotation or the late inning set up guy/closer, but the guy he knows he can trust to come in at any time of the game and throw strikes and put out fires and be able to use either multiple times or multiple innings in an SEC weekend. Can’t wait to see who all he brings in and how the roles wind up shaking out. Exciting times for LSU baseball.

To answer your question, Hurd would be the "closest" I suppose. But we won't have anyone actually close to Skenes for a very long time.

While this seems to currently be the case, I think it is also fair to assume that one of the three weekend starters is currently in the transfer portal.

It may be a long time before you see someone that dominant again. You may see someone throw as hard, but can they do it for 120+ pitches consistently?

But then again, nobody knew Skenes would become what he did either.

Thatcher apparently has the mindset to do it. The stuff and the physicality will be hard to match. Skenes is a freak

Pretty sure Little will get drafted and leave. As bad as he was this year, he’s still a big kid who throws really hard and is still young for a 3rd year guy. Too much to work with for somebody not to take him relatively high and think/hope they can unlock him.
