The fact that our defense was obviously better without him last year leads me to think that the coaches will finally have figured out how to use him on defense. weeks and perkins at lb would be a great way to start season

He's neither an every down LB nor a safety. He's a tweener. He needs to accept the fact that he's a guy who comes off the edge in obvious passing situations. If he does, he can thrive in that role.

That's basically what the "Star" position is.

Or the more likely theory is that Perkins was a weak link due to poor tackling and not being physical enough to rush the passer if he was being blocked. Whit Weeks tackles well (17 each in both the Alabama and OU games and named SEC defensive player of the week in both the Ole Miss and OU games). Once again, two DCs tried to use Perkins in different ways and other than his TR FR season at LSU, he wasn't really a factor after that. IMO, Perkins will be 3rd day pick in the NFL draft when he leaves college. That is not an impact player.

That's only because he played 200+ more plays as a sophomore. Or to put it another way, it took him essentially the equivalent of nearly 3 additional games to produce the same numbers he did in 2022. The raw numbers were the same, but the impact was FAR less

Sure, but you also have to consider half his sacks in 2022 were a result of Arkansas going full tard mode.

And yes, it took him more snaps because teams recognized a flaw pretty early on in our defense. Once Brooks went out, we had no safety capable of guarding a wide side slot receiver. So teams did the same thing every play, stick a receiver on the same side as Perkins and make us do 1 of 2 things.

1. Drop him in coverage and rush 4 below average lineman.

2. Blitz him and dedicate a safety to the box, weakening our already porous pass defense. Once we lost Brooks this wasn’t an option.

3. Still rush him and they would throw right at the slot receiver in his vacated region..

And all that was compounded by Matt House running the same nickel man formation 90% of snaps.

Well, if House was such a moron and Baker such a genius why hasn't Baker been able to stop running QBs with or without Perkins.

Our defense went from 108th in the country last year to 52nd this year. I’d say Baker did a pretty good job with the group of players dealt to him

He graded as one of the best LBs in coverage in 2023. He also had 13 TFL and 5.5 sacks. Does everything have to be so black and white? To say a player like that is a “non factor” is ignorant.

Any indication of a timeline before we hear anything on this?

So far I think no news is good news.

110% hope he returns. And hope he's 100% recovered.

As I've said many times and so have some others, the "grades" if they are by PFF are total jokes. Someone quotes PFF grades and said Sage Ryan graded out higher this season that Whit Weeks. That is past asinine and into the insane category. Once again, the defense improved dramatically when Whit Weeks took over for Perkins. Being named SEC defensive player of the week twice during the 2024 season is good evidence. Was Perkins ever named such during the 2023 season. I do remember him laying an egg vs Ole Miss in 2023 with either 5 or 6 missed tackles in that one game. That is a hideous stat and he led the team in such. Oh, and in the Alabama game the same season, he again led the team with 3 missed tackles. So I will repeat my claim that after the 2022 season, he was pretty much a non-factor.

AZ Sports column had more stats. About 2024 pre-injury obviously "Perkins struggled mightily as a box player over the first month of games, often guessing and lacking the strength needed to survive against interior blockers."....and "He missed five tackles with only 10 stops across 224 snaps in four games. He also allowed all five targets to be completed. He's a freak athlete but not someone who knows how to play linebacker yet." That above is pretty much what I and several others here have said about him. As of now, he has no position to really contribute...a non-factor.

Tricky one.

It won’t be the popular opinion but it appeared that he played ‘to avoid injury’ this year and got injured. …Just like my HS coach used to preach.

Coming off of injury, I just don’t see him playing aggressively like we need him to.

Hmmm, almost as good as Whit Weeks who was named 1ST Team All SEC this season.

The comparison isn’t Weeks v Perkins but rather Perkins being a “non-factor.” Do non-factors typically get named to all conference teams? That was a rhetorical question btw

People are so obsessed with arguing in extremes it’s not surprising this is being said about Perkins. Didn’t play like a 1st round edge rusher? He was worthless. That about sums up this board in a nutshell

I actually gave specific issues with Perkins...not just my opinion but quoted an outside source that said the same things. 1) he is a tweener which means he doesn't have a position he can play 2) his tackling is poor as documented by multiple games where he led LSU in missed tackles 3) his pass rushing/sacks went dramatically down once the teams realized that he wasn't strong enough to bull rush anyone....including RBs I might add and thus assigned a blocker on blitzing. Yes, I continue to call him a non-factor. Oh, and BTW, we will see who is right when he ends up going to the NFL which I assume will be 2026 because he sure as hell isn't ready now. At best, he is a 3rd day pick....may not be drafted at all.

Hot Damn! You must not have seen the play he got hurt on… head on collision with big TE and his knee just gave out.
