Making a bowl game would be huge if House is retained.

Next year 10-2 and we get into the playoff somewhere in 9-11 range

We win a playoff game and lose in the second round to either Georgia or Bama

I think at worst the defense will be margins better. If for no other reason than young guys for experience this year.

If we keeps this defensive staff, in particular House, then he damn well better be in the playoffs. If we have to sit here and watch a shite defense again, then the blame firmly lies on Kelly next season because he decided not to make changes.

Not making the playoff would be a failure imo. I don't think we'll win a national championship, but making the playoff should be the expectation.

This is a pretty good measuring stick.

Looking at the actual schedule

OOC - Neutral site vs UsC, home vs UCLA, Nichols and USA

SEC - home Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole Miss,
vandy

Road - Arkansas, Florida, A&M, South Carolina

Our three toughest games are at home.

Recruiting - less than needed to win the SEC. Abysmal with the DL, DBs and need higher level LBs too.

o add on to this..

Kirby Smart had UGA in the national championship in Y2 but didn't win it all until Y6.

2024 doesn't feel like a national championship season with all of the uncertainties. Losing a Heisman candidate, losing Malik and BT and having such a shitty defense with and adding a new DC.

2025 we'll lose our dominant OL and QB will be most likely be a first year starter assuming Nuss shows enough to go to the NFL.

It feels like 2026 will be the first year we should actually be in a position to compete for a natty.

Here in lies the problem. Unless you are able to recruit on the level of teams like UGA, Bama or Ohio St; there's always going to be the "breaking in new starters, lack of depth or talent/skill limitations at some positions" issue.

You keep hoping for that right window where you have both talent and experience and the depth to mitigate injuries to make a run. We hit that in 2019 when we returned the QB, skill players had an experienced OL and a talented defense. This season we had that on offense, but not on D. Next year we have talent, but lack of experience at the skill positions on offense and a questionable D.

Until we can recruit top talent consistently, we'll keep chasing the window.

The two year honeymoon is over. A 10 win regular season needs to be the expectation for the next five years, barring something beyond the norm (losing your starting QB week 1-3). Regardless, the season should be a massive disappointment if we aren't in a 12 team playoff.

Kelly MUST address the DC issue and probably as importantly, the Lyndsey issue asap. We went this entire recruiting cycle without a D-Line coach and a DC who sucked at it and it shows as we look extremely weak again this class. In addition, there is no reason for us not to have a 1st team All-SEC caliber defensive back, and currently we have no one even close. That has to change.

That said, the offense has been shockingly great and the O-line next year should be our best in a generation. The continuity of the OC can not be stressed enough as this will be Nusss's third year under Denbrock and his system.

Well we play UCLA, USC, Bama, Oklahoma, Florida, Ole Miss, and TXam. I believe 9-3 is reasonable with new QB & hopefully some new staff, and losing the should be Heisman JD5, 9-3 is sufficient as long as we are in thick of things of the new SEC & new 12 team CFP.

I agree with this to a point. It may be picking nits with the rankings(yes, rankings are highly subjective, but they do have at least some merit) but, we can be consistently top 6 without having to be Top 3 and not have those problems. What we cant be is 10-15th with 6 conference teams ahead of us.

So he was a liar when he said we were a year away and that's why we shouldn't have expected a championship run this year with the offense we had?

What will be the next excuse for why we aren't contending?

That's not how it works. If BK goes and hires a shitty defensive staff and doesn't get anybody from the portal, you can't change the goals for the season.

You are mixing two different words: "Goals" v. "Expectations".

The "goals" for next season don't change. They are to win every game LSU plays. Only LSU can set their own goals. The "expectations", on the other hand, don't exist in a vacuum.

Kelly may hire a great DC. LSU may be significantly improved on defense. They may have a good offense (though it is unlikely to match this seasons)...and they may have an equal worse record because the competition they face next year is BETTER than it was this season. So while it is easy to set "goals" you can't reasonable establish any expectations without knowing what the competition looks like.

Take for instance the 2011 vs. 2012 LSU teams. The 2012 team may have actually been better, or at least more balanced, than the 2011 team with Metenberger at QB. Hill emerging as a big time RB. And several young defensive players getting better in 2012. However, LSU finished with a worse record. Why?

Florida was MUCH better in 2012 than they were in 2011. Plus, LSU had to play @ Florida. A South Carolina team that finished 11-2 was on the schedule that wasn't there in 2011. Same for A&M. Alabama was better in 2012. Same for Mississippi St. Ole Miss was much better with Freeze as HC.

That 2012 LSU team was really, really good. However, much (not all) of their competition got stronger in 2012. More balanced team...but more loses.

So to just say I EXPECT LSU to win 10+ games next season without fully knowing how strong their competition might be at this point is foolish. That, of course, doesn't mean the GOAL shouldn't be to win 10+ games. That's two different things.

No way to know. The offense looks to step back. The defense? Is there anyone new that can make plays?

Wait, so now 2012 had a harder schedule than 2011?
