I think its much less than a NCAAT bid, unfortunately.
There was apparently no standards or expectations for this season. The way MM finished it was embarrassing.
SW will just cite improvement from the 2025 disaster and hes back for year 5.

Mediocrity acceptors. We will never have a competitive program with this mentality. I’m convinced that these people are not basketball fans.

As long as the team has fun and wins 4 games Scott will be pleased.
We have no expectations or standards here anymore

You've come to the wrong place.

If he does, it almost makes it seem like the lack of NIL excuse has some merit. I don't think it does. At least not to explain the regression from year 2 to 3.
Making the tournament is the realistic expectation of a coach at LSU in MBB for now. If they can make it repeatedly in consecutive years, then it will be to make deeper and deeper runs.
So if MM makes the tournament, especially if he has a reasonably good SEC season, he will get another year. As he probably should if they gave him one after this season. If he wins a game in the tournament, I doubt many could argue against retaining him, just from an optics perspective. If he makes a deep run, that probably means he will finish out his contract barring a disastrous collapse the next season.
FTR I believe next season will be as abysmal as this one and should spell the end of the MM era in MBB at LSU. ANd hopefully the beginning of the Billy DOnovan era (A guy can dream) at LSU.

So does everyone else, so why extend the misery?

I am not privy to that information and I do not know that he will definitely be extended. I only heard that via a radio host who has made absolutely wrong statements in the past.
Those sorts of leaks are sometimes flyers to see what the reaction will be but also unofficial statements make it easier to backtrack.
We can only hope

If he makes the tourney he's coming back. Even as a 12+ seed and a one-and-done. In Woody's eye, probably winning one game in the SEC Tourney is enough because he thinks we're all stupid and thinks MBB doesn't matter to anybody.
