I still want McDonnell or Godwin. I'm fine with Vitello but I don't think he'll do any better than McDonnell or Godwin.

Any of the 3 will have success here.

I would Be happy with McDonnel but he does have a 4-10 CWS record.

It’s not like he goes deep every time.

1-2
0-2
0-2
1-2
2-2

In his 5 appearances.

I'm just messing, but I agree. I'm good with any of those three. But Vitello being 42 is giving him the edge for me.

But he is in there 5 times with L'ville. That is saying something.

That’s sort of how I feel too. My first choice would be Corbin, then Godwin, then Vitello.

I forgot Herman coached Houston to a top 2 national ranking in the SEC.

Herman/Vitello comparison is such a lazy take. Vitello has made it to the biggest stage in the hardest conference in essentially 3 years.

Exactly. Not to mention that baseball is just a different animal altogether. Corbin, O'Sullivan, McDonnell, O'Connor, Godwin, Vitello - all went from assistant to head coach and have had great success at head coaching gig (obviously the latter two with the least amount compared to the others). Vitello checks every box that you'd look for in a potential hire. If the only gripe is that he's cocky/arrogant and chews on umpires (even if it's sometimes viewed as petty), then that dude would kill it at LSU. I hope its TV - he's been my 1A with Dan McDonnell as 1B this entire search.

Im not saying that Vitello will be a failure, but what i am saying is that we should not shower him with knighthood either. He may blow the doors off here at LSU, but then for all we know he may fold like wet paper when he is driven by some real expectations.

If Vitello fails, Andy C will have rejuvenated his career by then and can hop over.

Why Godwin over Vitello?

Sure

And Vitello won the East in his fourth year at Tennessee and made the CWS.

It’s not like Tennessee is some stories program either.

I’d be happy with both. I’m just pointing out being upset Vitello went 0-2 but ignoring McDonnell’s 4-10 record is a bit hypocritical.

I wouldn’t hate Godwin either

But what’s amazing about his resume?

He knows LSU and has a longer track record of continued success at ECU. Freaking ECU.
I’m just a bit more comfortable with him than Vitello. I should be clear though - I wouldn’t be disappointed with Vitello, I just wouldn’t have him as my first choice.

“Knowing LSU “ isn’t and shouldn’t be a factor in the job. Perfectly fine to prefer Godwin but that shouldn’t crack the top 10 of reasons because it’s largely meaningless

The same question goes for Vitello. Tony has had a good, quick rise but he's only been to Omaha once and he's 0-2. The body of work is really small. Cliff has several successful seasons under his belt but hasn't gotten to Omaha yet. Both have a great track record as assistants.
