That seemed to help against CMU.

Maybe they wanted to control the pace of the game to prevent State from having too many opportunities to score points like last year. However they still had more plays than we did.

Every game is different. That didn’t make sense with the game plan we had on defense. We knew the defense was going to be on the field a ton, couldn’t afford to have quick 3 and outs on offense too.

I thought they were trying to go away from that so much because it's messing with the tempo?

I thought our plan was excellent. But we did go conserve and we finally had a busted assignment that made it close.

But until we figure out how to stop the run, run the ball and do better with our pass blocking it will be a tough season.

I wish admins would allow this answer to be stickied and tell the OP to take a seat.

90% of their plays were high percentage checkdowns, so by the nature of it they were going to run a lot of plays

These are the best answers IMO.

I hope we continue trying more tempo on offense, but Orgeron did not want the defense to get torched by Leach again, so today's gameplan made sense, even if it wasn't always pretty.

At what point does having no rhythm (just like the UCLA and MSU games) and not sustaining drives not equal the same damn result- not possessing the ball enough? We saw better execution and the offense actually getting into a groove running with tempo last week. They were NEVER in a groove today. We had to rely on big plays to win because we didn’t really sustain drives.

I understand why the staff slowed things down, but there is absolutely no reason that they couldn’t have mixed in periods of tempo to shake things up and try to get Max and the offense into a groove. Playing all one way one week and then completely abandoning what worked a week later is ridiculous.

If we don’t use tempo vs Auburn, we will probably lose. This offense just doesn’t work with these players without tempo. After 4 games, I think we’ve all seen enough to know that’s how this offense will play its best. If that’s what we are, then the staff needs to accept it and embrace it, like it or not.

You know we played CMU last week, right and as bad as State is they are way better than CMU.

Who gives a shite? CMU is better than McNeese and we looked just as out of sync against them as we did today against State. You don’t completely abandon something that finally worked because the opponent has a better defense. You stick with what works, at least to some extent.

So tell me- did the fricking meercat, milk the clock offense produce any flow or momentum today? Do you think that’s how this offense will play its best football? If it wasn’t producing long drives and more TOP, then did it really work better than using any tempo?

if we had any semblance of a run game, this strategy would have blown out State. LSU held State to 10 points and way under 6 yards a pass attempt for almost the entire game.

You may be right. Not trying to be argumentative.

But this team doesn't have the luxury of sacrificing its offensive identity (that was coming into its own last week) for supposedly a game specific departure.

We'll need that identity for the rest of the season.

But then again with O's future pretty much on the line today, it was win at all costs.

ETA: Misey94 gets it.

This team is still learning to execute. You can't play fast when we haven't proven to execute at our best by playing too fast. No reason to go away from what was working and wear our defense down for nothing.

This makes 0 sense. Either the LSU offense will move the ball or they will not. If tempo helps, why not do it. This offensive game plan had Eddie's fingerprints all over it. Same scared money that lost the ND game and Troy to mention a couple. The best help for the defense is to score points. Simple as that.

Couldn't get it going in the third quarter because the offense scored on two of its first three plays. The Defense was on the filed the entire 3rd. Once we got to the 4th, LSU had to slow it down and pick up first downs to give defense a breather and to burn clock.

uptempo would not have worked, because that means giving State offense more opportunities. We needed to control the clock and we were effective till the fourth quarter when it sort of unraveled
