We were good till that dickwad Quincy Carter showed up in TS and beat us with that other douche from GA. He played CB and WR. He is an all pro with the Denver Broncos.
We were top 10 and shite rolled downhill after that.

LSU was preseason #5 or #6 in 1998.
LSU had Kevin Faulk, Rondell Mealy and Cecil Collins on the front cover of SI.
Then Cecil Collins decided to break into a woman's home and stand in front of her bed with his pants down in the dark.
What a waste. He could have been an All-American and All-Pro.
The seeds were actually sown the week AFTER that '97 Florida game. Dinardo could not get along with either his DC or his OC, and got rid of both for Lou Tepper as his DC and some young GA/QB assistant for OC whose name escapes me.
The loss to Georgia just kinda started a downward spriral. It was the week after Georges hit and we had beaten Idaho but gave up 400 yards to the Vandals in the process.
The players did show heart in close losses to Kentucky, at Ole Miss, Alabama and at Notre Dame. In fact the only game they were were really out of was Arkansas to end the year.
(The '97 ND game was at DV, '98 at South Bend).
The Alabama game was mind-numbingly heartbreaking.
We had not beaten Alabama in Death Valley since 1969, and it looked like we would finally win one against them at home. We led something like 16-10 or 16-9 in the 4th quarter, but gave up TWO tipped pass touchdowns to the same receiver, tipped by the same DB, in the same location. Never heard Tiger Stadium quieter.....
Dinardo was a lame-duck in '99.
By December of '99, former Ole Miss and Newman (N.O.) baskeetball player Sean Tuohy, who was friends with Nick Saban's agent Jimmy Sexton, called AD Joe Dean and Chancellor Mark Emmert to tell them they should interview the then-Michigan State coach. The rest is history.......

One of the worst losses I've ever experienced as a fan. That was a gut punch. We had them beat and to lose on TWO fluke plays was just too much. I just felt like LSU was cursed.

Believe it or not, I think we scored on the first play from scrimmage (Herb Tyler) and we led 21-14 at halftime.
We got outscored 22-0 in the second half. The Ole Miss QB (Kent Austin?) threw about 500 take-the-snap-stand-up-and-dink passes of 3-6 yards each. It was nauseating.

That series with Notre Dame was one of the most woeful for those two programs that I can ever remember. It was like neither one of the teams wanted to win the game. The QB play was just awful.
LSU finally came out hard against ND in the final bowl match between the two that ND finally deigned to accept (think it was the premier of the white helmets if I remember correctly).

Yes and RB John Avery. Found this. Back breaking runs too.
Rushes.............. 26 John Avery, vs Ole Miss (Oct 18, 1997)

The Nov '97 game vs ND at DV was cold and rainy and miserable. I think ND won this snoozefest I think like 24-6 or something like that.
But we got a rematch the next month in Shreveport in the Indy Bowl and beat the crap out of them.
Mealey rushed for an LSU Bowl-record 222 yards.
I don't recall the score but I think it was something like 29-7. Yeah I remember those white helmets also.
The '98 Notre Dame game was at South Bend and we lost 39-36 but came very close to winning as back-up QB whose name escapes me (he went on to play for Green Bay) threw a pretty long sideline pass to Abram Booty that he nearly caught for the go-ahead touchdown....

Funny you say that about Master P. Didn't alot of the players in 98-99 get that IDGAF attitude and start using drugs and such? Could have been rumors.

I thought for sure he would make a decent NFL running back after that game.
Did he get a short stint with Green Bay? No clue honestly.

That ND game was one of the worst unis LSU ever donned.
'98 was a season that we all looked so forward to and turned to shite. Guess it was part of the process.

If I remember right, the LSU offense still scored over 30 pts a game that year. The problem was everybody else scored over 35. Watching that defense felt like getting raped.

Yes he was with Green Bay for a few seasons.
I realy felt bad for Mealey. He was a great RB who was behind other great RBs.
His one year to shine - he was behind one of the worst offensive lines in recent LSU memory in 1999.
