I'll tell you what happened! The best damn thing ever to happen in modern LSU football happened! The curtain dropped and the wizard (Dinardo) was exposed as the small minded, idiot that had NO clue how to run a football program. It opened the door to Nick Saban and the rebirth of LSU!!! That's what happened.

I was at that ND game as well - we should have one it and a lot of ND people told me the same thing after the game

It was a great experience seeing the Tigers play at ND but the outcome was a downer

the one at ND was a heartbreaker

LSU should have won but I think they missed two short FG's and a extra point or two

faulk had a KO return for a TD and still lost that game

Was the team that bad or so pourly coached?

The O had a lot of talent (Tyler was a very good QB, great RB's, Larry Foster, Abram Booty at WR and a good OL). The D just made almost every game a track meet; seemed like they couldn't stop anybody. Just realy bad coaching and game planning.

A couple of other comments:
a) I would also add Alan Faneca left early for the NFL after the '97 season. In a critical series here-n-there throughout the season he could have been a difference maker.

b) If not familiar with the '98 season, then think '08. The '08 season was very akin to the '98 season. Tepper was a whole decade ahead of Malleveto. And although Les gets a lot of grief for the clock mismanagement issues, he's a much better game manager than DiNardo was.

My first memory of LSU football was the 97' game against florida, I was only 6 years old and only have a few images, that pass for memories in my head, of the game
I was 20 years old and present and only have a few images that pass for memories of the game...but one image was riding a goalpost as it was being carried down the field (for about 10 seconds until I fell off and got trampled).

John Avery ran all over us. Wasn't Deuce a Frosh or Soph, or something at that time too?

This guy and I are on same page. Anyone remember that Ole Miss game after the UF win? Anyone FORGET that game

Remember it so well. A beautiful fall day. We had seats right next to the players who don't dress out sit. My then wife, my daughter (was two), and me. We had (3) tickets, but one was not in that section. The gate captain let us in after some pleading. It was an 11:30 game, Abram Booty dropped a 50 yard touchdown pass right before halftime on a play that had been being set up all day.

So there's three of us in two seats, sitting next to huge young dudes.....my daughter fell asleep at around 1:00, with me holding her.

My shoulder/arm is still asleep to this day.

It also seems as if we had really bad special teams, (PAT's & fieldgoals) i've watched a few 98-99 season games, and we keep on missing these chip shots

The Nov '97 game vs ND at DV was cold and rainy and miserable. I think ND won this snoozefest I think like 24-6 or something like that.
But we got a rematch the next month in Shreveport in the Indy Bowl and beat the crap out of them.
Mealey rushed for an LSU Bowl-record 222 yards.
I don't recall the score but I think it was something like 29-7.

The score actually was 27-9. Didn't LSU play with the gold jerseys also?

Unfortunately yes. Such a huge let down after the Fla. win. However my most vivid memory of that game was that immediately following another one of Ole Miss's scores in the second half, their cheerleaders started running along the east sideline with their big Ole Miss flag. Well, that was the apparent breaking point for some poor SOB about 6 rows up from me. He took what seemed to be a completely full 44 oz coke and threw it at the OM cheerleaders from about 40 rows up. Unfortunately he didn't have quite enough arm strength to reach the field and the cup, still quite full, hit an old lady with cotton-ball like hair sitting in the first row square in the back of the noggin. Coke and napkins sprayed everywhere and the poor old lady face planted out of her seat and right into a hotdog.

One of the worst losses I've ever experienced as a fan. That was a gut punch. We had them beat and to lose on TWO fluke plays was just too much. I just felt like LSU was cursed.

Amen. Still cant believe that game

1998 and 1999 were a blessing in disguise. The culture at LSU was so different then... had DiNardo managed a 6-5 record in either of those seasons, you can bet he is retained in 2000. Joe Dean wanted to retain him even after two losing seasons.

Despite similar records, the two teams were very different.

As someone already pointed out, in 1998 each of the losses were close, with the exception of Arkansas. By the Arkansas game, we were 4-6 and already eliminated from bowl contention. The Notre Dame loss basically took the wind of out of their sails, and Herb Tyler was injured. The team would just collapse late in games. We beat hapless Auburn in Jordan Hare (Terry Bowden would quit 2-3 weeks later). We lost the nailbiter to Georgia, Florida basically took care of business in the Swamp, and Tim Couch lit us up in Tiger Stadium, probably securing his spot as the number one pick in that year's draft. I am still perplexed by the fact that we beat SEC West Champ State 41-6, yet didn't win a game for the rest of the year. The Alabama loss was gut wrenching.

1999 we were just so bad, it was unreal. Most of the SEC games weren't even close. 42-24 Ole Miss, 41-7 Auburn, 31-5 Kentucky, 31-10 Florida. Don't forget the only loss to State of the last 20 years.

It's mind boggling to think that LSU managed to drop 10 straight conference games from 98-99.
