What exactly does an offensive analyst do?

And how many schools have them? I know Bama had one and now LSU.
Why doesn't it count toward the maximum number of assistant coaches a school can have?

They don't have any direct contact with the players. They just watch and provide feedback and advice to the actual coaches.

Bama has A LOT.
By definition - no contact with on field players, no recruiting, etc. Basically they break down film and act as a coaches assistant.
If I was O, I would be pushing to get an analyst for every position on the field.

That seems to be a guideline, not a requirement. Multiple instances of Bama "analyst" working with the kids on the sidelines this year.

watch tons of film, locate tendencies, watch other successful offenses and send plays/schemes to offensive staff members to look at and incorporate.

I imagine a lot of time is spent going through every game film of every opponent and finding tendencies or tells. What percentage of the time does a team run left in a certain formation? How often do they pass? How is each scenario affected by personnel?
They probably have input in the early stages of game plan development.

They are subject matter experts that are not allowed coaching contact with the players. There is no limit to my knowledge how many analysts you can have but you are limited to 9 coaches. This distinction of player contact is where the line is drawn to keep a program in the limit of "coaches"
I know of at least two LSU Offensive analysts because they came up on my suggested twitter users to follow.
There is one more title that I am not sure where that falls - "Grad Asst" or GA. I don't know if these are considered analysts or quasi coaches.

Spends hours breaking down film of opponents. If you get a good one it can help tremendously.

I would imagine they analyze the offense

We should have hired Jason Taylor to analyze our offense three years ago.

What is the title for their recent players that failed in the pros and come back and play for the scout team?
