re: What does it take to host a regional?

The conference tournament(s) certainly have an affect on the selection of regional host sites.
Again, it's a longshot for LSU to host, but doing well in the SEC tournament and winning all our games up to the point where regional host sites are announced is very important in terms of our chances at hosting.

I agree, but to completely deny that it isn't plausible is absurd, IMO.

add to that the fact that they could toss ULL or SLU into the BR regional and really blow up attendance
Interesting. SLU is still alive in the Southland, ULL is done in the Sun Belt, but still has a RPI of 41 (should be good enough) Southern is in the losers bracket of the SWAC, but knocked off their 1 seed Jackson State.
If ULL, SLU and/or Southern all make the field, the NCAA would have an extra incentive (travel costs) to put some of them in Baton Rouge. They would still have to import a 1 seed, though.
We could see:
1)
2) LSU
3) ULL
4) Southeastern/Southern
in Baton Rouge.

I put up a brave fight last night trying to map out a scenario whereby LSU would host, but I think I might have to now concede that it is really a huge long shot, especially with FSU's win over UVA and Auburn's win over SCAR today
C'mon Doc if Lsumatt can get us into the BCS game, you can surely get us a regional

Sure the conference tournaments play a part, nobody said they didn't.
I said winning it will not make a difference, and it won't because it is impossible.

MOT is correct, regionals are announced Sunday 2:30 pm CST on ESPN before tournament winners are known

TCU is too good to travel, IMO. Oklahoma is a different story.

How can Vandy even be considered? Even though their ballpark is new it only holds what? 4,000 maybe.

It's frustrating that LSU dropped the Sunday game to Vanderbilt, Friday and Sunday at Kentucky, and Saturday against Mississippi State. Winning those would have us at 18-12 and pretty much a lock to host after the first two wins in the tournament.
Of course it's all if if if now.

These are the host locks, imo..
Virginia
Texas
Arizona State
Florida
Coastal Carolina
Texas Christian
UCLA
Cal State Fullerton
Louisville
South Carolina
Georgia Tech
Oklahoma
Auburn
There are 3 sites up for grabs, imo.. This is who LSU will be weighed against.. i think the teams in bold are the ones that have the best shot..
Florida St 40-17
Arkansas 40-18
San Diego
Miami 40-16
Virginia Tech
Connecticut 44-13
Rice 37-20
Oregon
Washington State
UC Irvine
Vanderbilt
Clemson
Ole Miss

they've hosted before and 4,000 is a good size.

They are on UConn's jock to host from a geographical standpoint.

Geez. If we have to play at Rice I'll puke, but at least I'll be here!!

Vandy can be considered because it is now based more on merit than money.

Face it. No matter what, we're a 2 seed in someone else's Regional
Not so fast,my friend! Never underestimate the power of money. If there is any shred of an excuse to put a Regional in Alex Box with last year's National Champ, they will do it. I agree that they will probably be a 2 seed, but it isn't unprecendented for a 2 to host.
If they win out in the SEC Tourney, their resume will be:
SEC Tourney Champs
40 wins
Top 20 RPI
Better Record than Ole Miss
Same number of wins as Arkansas (and won series)
LSU would be the fourth SEC host site behind Florida, South Carolina and Auburn. With the recent push to be more inclusive of other regions of the country, I don't see the SEC getting 5 regional sites.
If they don't win the SEC Tourney, they have a ZERO chance of hosting.

Will they do two in the same city?
ETA: I'm an idiot...
They've done Raleigh/Cary more than once.

If the NCAA is greedy as usual, they may give us one.
If they want to make CBB a united sport, they'll give U Conn or Pitt one. Or someone of the nature. St. John's got one a few years ago and didn't draw crap, but the game is changing and swiftly. It has not been until very recently that baseball has become nationally prominent and it still has a long way to go.
We finished 5th in the west. If we get one, I'll be happy but surprised. Just the way it is. The SECt in baseball is very similar to basketball, but with more on the line...the hosting of a regional.

Then they have zero chance, because at the time the decision is made, the outcome of the game won't be known

I'll do my best to come up with a crazy scenario that gets LSU a regional over the weekend!
