I was there = north end zone in line with the east hash marks about 2/3 the way up. Me, my wife and 10 month old son, and my mom and dad.

Cannon ran straight toward us. At first it was hard to see what was happening, but by the time Cannon passed the 50 it was obvious he was going all the way.

The stadium was erupting. Some drunk from above us came tumbling down the stairs and got up yelling his head off - not a scratch on him.

The most anxious part of the game was holding the Rebels inside the 5 yd line for four plays to end the game.

The day before the game was the most excited I had ever seen the campus. You could hear "GO TO HELL OL MISS!!" all day and into the night. From the time the bus carrying the team arrived it was constant noise.

Truth be known, Ol Miss probably had the better team, but they tried to nurse a 3 pt lead for the whole game - punting on third down to make sure nothing bad happened on fourth. I thought that was dumb of them at the time, and it probably cost them the game.

But the Cannon run was special. I'll never forget that game.

If you have a program from this game, hold on to it. They are worth a lot of $$.

I have a program. It is not in good shape - and has some pages missing, including the one that has the Cannon information on it.

Not for sale - going to my son.

Great stories in this thread. To be honest, I never knew a goal line stand is what won the game! And Cannon was in on the tackle?

Yes - players played both offense and defense in those days. Cannon was also the place kicker and punter.

I'll also never forge the next week when we were upset by Tennessee. Cannon always swears he scored on the two point conversion attempt, but the refs didn't see it.

I hated Tennessee forever after that game.

Now that I don't remember - made no difference at the time so I just didn't register it.

If I had to guess, I'd say blue - that has roughly a 50-50 chance of being correct.

The White team was the O correct?

Was the Go team the D?

What were the Chinese Bandits?

TIA.

95 % of the posters here aren't old enough to have been at the 1999 game, much less the '59 game. And the ones that are old enough are still pissed off that LSU didn't repeat as national champs.
But Ole Miss fans should revel in this season. Having a good team once every 20 years makes you appreciate their success. LSU fans are stupid and spoiled.

There were limited substitutions, so Dietzel essentially invented (or popularized, in any event) platoon football.

The White Team was the best players.

The Gold (Shortened to Go) were offensive and short yardage specialists, essentially the second team offense.

The Chinese Bandits were the second team defense. They had a handful of offensive plays in case they got the ball near the end of a quarter.

The sub rules were by quarter.

Mother-in-law was there, she wasn't with the eventual sperm donor for SO #1. She said it was magical.

Folks who weren't alive and aware of sports back then don't remember how legitimate Ole Miss was in the late 50s and early 60s. The Rebs got politically screwed out of a couple of NCs in the early 60s. Not that I'm sad...

WHITE team played both ways.

GO Team was offense only

Chinese Bandits were defense.

White team started each quarter and played both an offensive and defensive series. Then either the GO or CB team went in. When possession changed, the other went in. If there was another change of possession before the quarter ended, the WHITE team went back in and played the remainder of the quarter.

The rules then were that only a player who was on the field when the quarter started could be removed and come back into the game during that quarter.

The Chinese Bandits knew a couple of offensive plays in case they should get trapped on the field due to some circumstance. It never happened. I don;'t think think the GO team had any defensive expertise at all.

The Bandits did play offense once though - I think it was against DUKE. Nobody had scored on the Bandits until the Duke game, and the Bandits told Deitzel 'we want to get our touchdown back.' He allowed them to play a series at the end of the game and they did score. Final score was something like 56-7.

Great days back then.

Nice to realize how long folks have been making up bullshite stories about Tiger Fans.

My dad was there as a freshman. His memories are hazy to say the least. He remembers watching the ref run with Billy.

Yeah - I lived on campus and there was no such occurrence. I think I would have heard about it.
