If Welter was the best we had I would say ok. But he's not regardless of that play. The best 11 players should be on the field on every play. And the players rotating in should at least be the next best player. I don't see that happening at MLB. That's really the bottom line.

Look Welter makes mistakes but so has all other players on defense. Why such hate for one player. Everybody says you shouldn't boo players but it's okay to write in on a screen. Seems to be a double standard on the Web.

Clearly Deion Jones missed the assignment to cover QB on TD run. It is man to man coverage on play with Welter covering running back. The coaches know that Welter is not Lightning quick so they put him on covering the man that would be the slowest to get started. Welter does spend time at the beginning of plays making sure players are in their correct locations, so he has a leadership position.

This is mostly right, but it was Bower who missed his assignment.

Welter's assignment was to cover the running back, and he came up to cover the inside handoff which turned out to be a fake. The quarterback ran through the hole that Bower made by going outside of the tackle. Welter tried to get back over but the tackle was missed by Bower who grabbed at his ankles.

Bower owned up to it:

quote:

“That was me,” Bower said. “I decided to try to go up field instead of reading my technique... I got out ahead of [the offensive tackle], but the quarterback saw it right away.”?

Because there is another option at mike linebacker. We already have true frosh playing in the secondary, who else is there to go to. Call up a hs kid?

I'm glad you found something to settle the dispute on this play.

I did not bash Deion, like people have been bashing Welter, You can point out a players mistakes without kicking him to the curb.

not sure anything's that clear on the play except it shouldn't have been that big a play. NOLA.com put it on Bower getting too wide, and he was the first to miss a tackle.

ultimately, we don't know the specific assignments on that play. but it sure seems like Welter could have read it a bit better and kept himself from getting engaged with the OL. had the QB given to the RB, he still looks like he wouldn't have been able to make much of a play.

There is no team at any significant level of football that plays "man to man" run defense.

I agree I choose to criticize coaches over players. I don't think I've ever said a player sucks.

I think deion plays with a lot of energy, fkys around. But he's too damn small and was bouncing off Prescott all night. Chavis has pretty much failed at the lb spot. Kwon is the only consistent player out of that group.

I got to run, but remember this, Welter is a Senior and probably know all plays by heart, freshman are still learning the plays.

Listened to Gordy Rush break the play down in detail this morning on Cullota's show. He said basically, the ends came too far upfield and should have pinched down more, but the primary responsibility on that play was DJ Welter. And Welter overran his read, then ducked his head, and was blocked out of the play. He said it was something that should never happen to a senior, and it happens regularly with Welter.

I think I'll go with Gordy's breakdown of the play, as a guy that played the game, over an internet persona that uses 69 twice in his username trying to convince me that a major college defense plays man to man against the run defense.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa!!!!

And yet despite that we're out of position half the time.
