I’m sure both will at least have a shot to land on a team. Watford was listed as 9th best available when the last pick was made. Smart was somewhere around 20 or so back. Fingers crossed we have 3 more Tigers in the league after it’s all said and done.

Watford signing a two-way deal with the Blazers. Each team only gets 2 of these contracts, so Trendon comes out pretty well here. Not much different than being picked between 40 and 60 in the 2nd round

Really wish they’d let you come back if not drafted

That will be nixed after Summer League. Fingers crossed for Smart and G League but Watford should see if there are opportunities in Uzbekistan right away.

People who claim they should have come back are making statements without 10% of the information available to the players.

Why? Neither was going to improve their draft stock. Honestly, we had both of them a year longer than anyone expected.
Basketball is much different than football when it comes to leaving early. There are a ton of leagues to play in where you can make really good money if you don't get drafted into the NBA. As much as I would have liked to have them back at LSU, they both made a smart financial decision.

With the NIL, he could have made just as much with endorsements at LSU than games checks from the G-League. It's not like it used to be anymore. If you're not guaranteed a 1st round pick, stay in school and still get paid. Even if you're not drafted you can return to school. I was hoping we could get Smart back, because we need a floor general.

quote:

The NCAA announced a rule change Wednesday that will allow players to return to school if they declare for the NBA draft but are not selected.

The new rule states that players who participate in the NBA combine can return "as long as they notify their athletics director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft."

That will replace the current rule, which permits players to maintain eligibility if they withdraw from the draft 10 days after the NBA combine.

Although a return to school would be "pending future action from the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association," it would take much of the risk out of declaring for the draft.

I mean they have real, honest feedback on their potential from NBA teams so yeah they have information we don’t.

People continue to grossly over estimate what the NIL will bring in.

You can make all the comments you want about Wade paying guys to return to college, but these two way contracts often end up in the nba in year one (at least for a little) and are looking at 6 figures.

Trendon Watford and javonte smart are not making 6 figures on NIL agreements.

Dude, Alabama's QB has already inked $800k in endorsements and he's completed 13 passes his entire college career. I'm pretty sure some potential SEC players of year can swing $100k worth.

Basketball is not football. Why do people keep making these comparisons?

I thought Watford at least would have went in the 2nd round based on this past season

Smart is not a NBA point guard
That lack of defined position really hurt him
