LSU V TENN
Interesting to watch.
This was a little before my time, but a few things stand out to me:
1. I'm pretty sure LSU punted on 3rd down a few times lol
2. The players are not much, if at all, bigger than the refs
3. LSU D was salty
4. My how the game has changed since then
5. Les Miles was born to coach in that era!

Edited for spell check

I can't think of one single advantage punting on 3rd down gives you. What was the point behind that strategy? I know it's a thing of the past but what was the point?

Here is a roster from NOLA. Could find official LSU version. Cannon was almost biggest man on team!

Each time they did it they were deep in their own territory, so I assume it was to catch them without their return team on the field to try and change field position.

Sure was difficult to score points in those days.

Another reason to punt on 3rd down was that if you mishandled a snap, then you could do it over on 4th down

Could we have a thread where some of yahoo would leave Les Miles out if it?

In the "Halloween" game, both teams kicked on third down & maybe 1st or 2nd. I was at this game & each team believed they stop the other & would wait other make a mistake or get a lead & sit on it with defense. These two teams averaged very low average scores for opponents the whole year.

The score was 3 to 0 OleMiss & Cannon has said he fielded the punt inside "15" because he believed this might be last chance for a win.

I wouldn't be surprised it substitution rules back then, which were extremely restrictive may have impacted this too. Don't really know them very well or understand their impact. At the time you could only substitute so many individual players--like 4 or 5 per quarter-- and only when the clock was stopped. I think you could substitute a whole unit at a time, but they had to play more than one series (i.e. both offense and defense). Imagine if you got caught with a unit that was mostly defense, discretion may be the best choice.

I was at that game also - do not remember LSU punting on 3rd down, but Ol Miss did it several times. The strategy is simply to avoid a turnover deep in own territory.

I listened to the UT game the next week on the radio. Very disappointed. Haven't liked Tennessee since.

Well it's been more years than care to think & I was looking thru the eyes of first semester freshman & not totally objective, I'm sure.

I agree totally with you about Tenn. The pictures show that Cannon definitely scored - know some of our Tenn friends will object, but that's OK.

Amazing how close to the field everyone sat. I mean right in the teams bench.

My Dad was there and was sitting right at the goal line where Cannon went for the 2 to win. He said till his dying day cannon was over and it cost us back-to-back as champions were declared before the bowls back then.

Also probably cost Cannon the 1959 Heisman. Terry Baker? Won Heisman.

Billy Cannon definitely won the 1959 Heisman. I believe Baker won in the 60's.

Just looked it up, Baker barely beat out Jerry Stovall in 1962.
