I was at the bank the other day setting up wire transfer capabilities for our business. It's a production to get the process set up. I mentioned about scamming, and the manager told me stories of one old lady coming in several times one day to wire money. They asked her a couple times what is going on. She said her daughter is in the hospital and needs money. When she came in the third time, they discovered that she had her daughter as an emergency contact. Before they transferred, they got her on the phone and she had to explain to her mom that she is perfectly fine. Old lady was in tears. Luckily it was only about $1000 that she had lost.

It's sad that this happens a lot now. One of my businesses sells gift cards in a small retail capacity but we train all our cashiers on looking out for gift card victims. I had no idea until FBI showed up at one of our locations around 10 years ago because of the scam.

Somebody tried to scam my grandfather once. They told him that his grandson, my cousin, was in some kind of trouble. My cousin was just fine, living his life with his wife and four kids across town.
