This thread makes reference to the greatest H.S. basketball player- what determines that? # of points scored? rebounds? sheer domination on the court? wins? Tough call. But the easiest choice is who went on to have the greatest career? That one is easy- Bill Russell, not even close...

Here are a couple of big men I didn't see mentioned:

Benoit Benjamin (Monroe)
Tom Curry (Baton Rouge)

Curry never made it to college due to personal problems, but he was one helluva player.

Bluff, I think I played against him at their Gym and they beat us by one point..They were very big and quick.....I played from 83-86 and had game high honors that day.

Best I saw play

Willie Jackson- Sibley 78-79
Michael Cutwright- Zwolle 86..That Dude could shoot from ANYWHERE!!!!

I looked it up. Tom Curry is #13 in Marshall University scoring and # 18 in rebounding. He was a McDonald All-American in 1982 or 1983 and apparently has a daughter playing basketball at Marshall now.

Procell, a Native American, was the best pound for pound highschool roundball player I ever personally saw. He was a crowd pleaser to be sure,
as the nation's alltime leading high school basketball scorer (6,702 points); averaging 46.7 points as senior at Ebarb High in 1969-70. He had scholastic issues which prevented his recruitment to established Div. I programs and had to go the JC route before playing at Northwestern State.
Sports Illustrated rates Procell as #36 on the list of greatest Louisiana sports personalities, pretty high for someone whos legend is built strictly from his glory days at Ebarb High.
Procell played much like one of his heros, Pistol Pete, whos collegiate career parralleled the highschool phenom form Ebarb. He and his number one running buddy, Walter Meshell once scored every single point in an approximate 132- 105 victory. Procell scored 100 in that game.
In the state championship game in 1970 they combined for over 80 points. I know that in one game I personally watched Procell scored 56 points and made at least a dozen jumpers from what would now be 3-pt territory. God only knows how many points he would've wound up with had he played with the arc. The last I heard from a friend who lives in the Toledo Bend area, Procell had become quite a reputable hunting and fishing guide and a salesman in the oil & gas industry.
