You have a good point on the time away from the SEC but he did build Kennedy's team at A&M and they won the league just last year. I have him 4th and yes there's no doubt he has deficiencies but the recruiting is top notch and there's stability there. You can use him to level up a bit build some recruiting avenues that weren't there before and get us to a level where the next hire wouldn't be such a risk.

Incorrect. Smart never won a regular-season championship at VCU. In his first year at VCU, they went 11-7 in conference and finished 5th.
They were back-to-back regular-season conference champs in 08-09 under Grant.
So, back to my point, while not "unpreCidented", he DID indeed do something his predecessor didn't do.
