In 1985 LSU was the University of Louisiana for a short while. Freinds who graduated that year received diplomas from The University of Louisiana.

They went through the process of requesting the change from the board in charge of all the non-LSU universities (I don't think it was referred to as the University of Louisiana Board of supervisors then but it was the same board) and were approved. Legislative action subsequently clarified that this was not permissible as it was implemented (I believe there was an ambiguity in the setup of the system that made the specifics unclear). I was at USL at the time and not really in favor of the change from USL but I do not remember the specifics of why it was changed then rescinded (no, the university did not simply change it). All I know is that generated considerably more animosity toward LSU than there was before. I think they felt that LSU had initiated the actions that forced the UL Lafayette/ULM scenario. It created a group of ULL fans my wife lovingly (sarcasm) refers to as yappy dogs.

Is this a military school?
