SI.com The 25 Best College Quarterbacks of the Past 25 Years
quote:
1. Joe Burrow, Ohio State (2015–17), LSU (’18–19) The orchestrator of college football’s greatest ever offense in 2019, Burrow made the leap from little-known backup with the Buckeyes to putting a ring on it with the Tigers as the ever-cool Joe Burreaux. Incredibly tough in the pocket, he would sit back and shred opposing defenses if they gave him so much as a slight opening at any level. Burrow won the Heisman Trophy with the highest percentage of points ever on his way to setting the NCAA record for single-season yardage and the FBS mark for touchdowns responsible for.
2. Cam Newton, Florida (2007–08), Blinn Junior College (’09), Auburn (’10) What Newton lacks in terms of longevity as a starting quarterback in college (just 14 games at the FBS level), he more than makes up for it with what is perhaps the greatest single-season performance of carrying a team to the national title. En route to winning the Heisman and the BCS championship with the Tigers in 2010, the dual-threat wowed with his size and arm strength, threw for 28 touchdowns and rushed for 20 more scores. Newton averaged over 10 yards per attempt and almost six yards per carry in his final season on a team that featured just three other NFL draft picks.
3. Vince Young, Texas (2002–05) His side-arm fling as a passer and smooth, galloping grace as a runner certainly made Young a unique quarterback and one who terrified opposing defensive coordinators for what he could do with the ball in his hands. The Longhorns were never out of the game with him in the lineup (he was 30–2 as a starter) as he guided Texas to its first national title in 35 years by almost single-handedly beating a USC team labeled as one of the greatest ever. Young was the first FBS player to pass for 3,000-plus yards and rush for over 1,000 in one season. He did just about everything he could on the Forty Acres aside from winning the Heisman.
4. Tim Tebow, Florida (2006–09)
5. Matt Leinart, USC (2001–05)
6. Lamar Jackson, Louisville (2015–17)
7. Baker Mayfield, Texas Tech (2013), Oklahoma (’14–17)
8. Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M (2011–13)
9. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson (2018–20) A
10. Marcus Mariota, Oregon (2011–14)
11. Jameis Winston, Florida State (2012–14)
12. Andrew Luck, Stanford (2008–11)
13. Kellen Moore, Boise State (2007–11)
14. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama (2017–19)
15. Jayden Daniels, Arizona State (2019–21), LSU (’22–23) Daniels was born toward the end of the year 2000 which really puts this group in perspective, but it’s hard to deny what he accomplished over the course of his career. He set several records as a true freshman at Arizona State before turbulent times led him to LSU, where he made it to the SEC title game and won the Heisman Trophy with an incredible campaign that saw him score 50 touchdowns and record 4,946 total yards.
16. Alex Smith, Utah (2002–04)
17. Caleb Williams, Oklahoma (2021), USC (’22–23)
18. Bryce Young, Alabama (2020–22) Y
19. Robert Griffin III, Baylor (2008–11) I
20. Stetson Bennett, Georgia (2017, ’19–22), Jones County Junior College (’18)
21. Carson Palmer, USC (1998–2002)
22. Kyler Murray, Texas A&M (2015), Oklahoma (’16–18)
23. Troy Smith, Ohio State (2002–06)
24. Michael Penix Jr., Indiana (2018–21), Washington (’22–23)
25. McKenzie Milton, UCF (2016–20), Florida State (’21)

Stetson Bennett?
Not even Georgia’s best QB in the last 25 years

After a year at Georgia he ended up for one year at Jones Community College in Mississippi? WTF?

Jayden should be no lower than 10-12 here. Trevor Lawrence, Tua, and Kellen Moore (who dat) were not better than the kid.
ETA: How the frick did McKenzie Milton make this list?
Drew Brees? David Carr? Kliff Kingsbury? Philip Rivers? Colt Brennan? Sam Bradford? Colt McCoy? Case Keenum? Deshaun Watson?

Jayden Daniels was way better than that. I would not argue with rating Burrow, and Cam ahead of him because what they did was spectacular. But Daniels was certainly a lot better than Vince Young. When Daniels finished I thought he was the best prospect to ever come out of college. Certainly better than anyone on that list.

Well, at least they realize that Mac Jones was mediocre during a normal season.

They are putting WAY too much emphasis on winning a title. It's a team sport

quote:Maybe they weighed some of those mixed bag years into it before his final year at LSU. But his senior year was one of the most incredible single seasons I have ever seen a QB have. Burrow had the greatest pure QB season that I've ever seen a QB have, but what Daniels did in the running game that year might not be duplicated. His ypc was insane. And his accuracy on long balls was awesome. His season was up there with what Burrow did.

As for Vince Young, he was pretty awesome too in college. That USC performance is legendary.

Tim Tebow at 4 is insane. I wouldn’t make it, but an argument could be made that based on body of work he’s #1 compared to the single seasons of Burrow and Cam.
I’d still have Joe #1 in any context though.

Jayden Daniels Passer Rating, QBR, and Yards per Attempt in 2023 was higher than every single other 24 QBs best season here, and that includes Burrow. I don't think most realize this even at LSU due to how bad the defense was. He literally put up the most efficient collegiate QB season I have ever seen. Set an FBS record for passer rating and did it vs Top 10 SOS, AND led the entire FBS in yards per carry as a QB (min like 100 rushes for ypc and 200 passes for QB stats).

Though he had a good season, he had the misfortune of having a worse NC game than JJ against Bama. Smith ended up with 6 total yards for the game. 35 passing and -29 rushing with an Int. UF's D completely dominated them.

The Case for Daniels
Daniels is no doubt top 8. Because he didn't win a championship, i can't put him top 3, but IMO, he had just as insane of a season as Burrow did, if not more insane. If you extrapolate his stats over 15 games you would get 6182 yards and 62.5 TDs.
His 11.7 yards per attempt passing is God mode. His 8.4 yards per attempt rushing is God mode for a RB, for a QB it's God of Gods mode.
His 10:1 TD:int ratio is God mode. Because it's 10 to 1 and the record for TD passes is 62, you cant throw more than 6 ints to have a 10:1 ratio. Since only 2 people even have thrown 60 TDs, you actually can't throw more than 5 ints realistically. Just going back over the last 9 years (as far as CFBstats site goes), only 6 QBs have done this with at least 25 passing TDs. Once you get to 40 TDs, that number drops to 4 players. If you're talking tough schedule, that number drops to 2 QBs (Burrow and Daniels).
Having the TD numbers is one thing. Having the total yards is one thing. Having super ridiculously insane yards per attempt is one thing. Having the super ridiculously insane yards per carry is one thing. Having the super stupidly ridiculously 10:1 TD:int ratio is one thing. Doing ALL of these things in one season is beyond insane.
If you're talking PURE statistical and efficient play, his numbers rivals all time insane seasons like Barry Sanders (2628 yards 7.6 ypc 37 TDs in 11 games 2850 and 42 TDs with bowl game stats included), Derrick Thomas 27 sacks,
Top 3
I would still rate Tebow #1 because of what he accomplished career wise for four years and stats.
Newton and Burrow at #2 for me. Newton had almost no recognizable talent on that team. To accomplish what he did, with also all that off the field controversy definitely has him at #2. I can not see another guy coming in and doing what those 3 did unless they win 2 heismans or win 2 national championships as the starter (in this way more balanced era) and a heisman.
Burrow is still the best pure passer i have ever seen in college football. There are a lot of guys that have put up insane passing numbers in college including his old teammate at Ohio St Haskins, who put up over 4800 pass yards and 50 pass TDs breaking 22 Big Ten records in his insane one and done year. However veey few were as efficent, and none did it on as big of stages as he did all season. His literal worst passing game was Auburn where he faced a DL that included a first rounder senior and a 2nd round senior. He completed 76% of his passes for 321 yards and a TD. He threw under 3 TD passes one other game and it was 2 TDs and 1 int vs Northwestern. However he did throw for 373 yards on only 24 attempts.
Misses
Colt McCoy was a 2x All American and was snubbed for a heisman. His 45 wins rank 2nd all time for a QB in NCAA Div 1 history IIRC (Kellen Moore had 50 i think). Back to back 1 loss seasons and led Texas to the NCG, but got knocked out early.
Deshaun Watson continues to get overlooked. Two heisman level statistical seasons that both went to the playoffs, and one that won the championship, plus his freshman year having such a great season despite having 3 injuries during the season including playing the last game, and winning, on a torn acl.
Honorable Mentions
Trevone Boykin. Boykin in back to back years posted heisman numbers on 11-2 and 12-1 TCU teams
CJ Stroud. Insane pure passing numbers and on one team that should have went to the NCG, and would have destroyed TCU, if not for a missed FG
Honorable Mention Season
Jalen Hurts. Wont go over anything, just the stats (70% 3850 yards 11.3 ypa 32 TD 8 int, 1300 rush yards 5.6 ypc 20 TDs)

Newton was the best college QB the last 25 years and it really isn’t as close as most think.
That Auburn team didn’t have NEARLY the talent as 2019. I think only one other player drafted in the first round, one in the seventh and one in the eleventh. They did beat only 2 top 10 teams and 4 or 5 top 20 teams.

Find a receiver CLOSE to BTJr, Taylor, ( and any from the bench), Malik Nabers, Chase, Marshall, CEH, and Jefferson on the Auburn roster with Newton. No offense but there is zero argument for willing a title like Newton did that season. For the record, I’m not a fan of his or all the BS that surrounded that situation.

After this statement all the other bullshite you rambled on about is lost- What the frick did you want him to do? Play LB or CB as well.
Lets do an assignment- Put Burrow on 2023 and put Daniels on 2019.
