These three became elite after they got here.

Wrong, he left Miles with over 30 NFL players including the number 1 overall NFL draft pick the numbers 3,5 and 6 NFL draft pics 4 other 1st rounders and 2 later round All-Pro NFL players. Miles inherited the most talented roster in LSU history so calling it and empty bag is a huge exaggeration. To Miles credit he won with these guys but saying Saban left him with nothing is the farthest thing from the truth.

Cholly Mac is a CFB HOFer
Both Saban and Miles surely will also be when eligible
So, the question in your OP is false

but his success was in maintaining a program at a level just under the elite status Saban had established.
Miles' first 7 years was a significant increase over Saban's 5 years at LSU, period. Yes, there was a clearly sub-elite trend line from 2012 onward (really can't charge 2016 to Les - O didn't do better than Les had been doing in 2016 or 2017) - so those 4 years fit your argument.
But, not Les' first 7 seasons - that was a full notch over Saban's - in winning percentage alone.

quote:Gerry Dinardo never gets enough credit for what he brought to LSU. He recruited well. He got the most out of his players individually and as a team. He patched the whole shambles that was in post Archer and Hallman ruins back together and returned the “Magic” to LSU. Football became fun and exciting again under his leadership. But his one tragic mistake, and it was a big lingering one, was Lou Tepper. Never was there ever a worse coaching fit at LSU than Tepper. And Gerry wouldn’t fire him. Thus Endeth the magic. Thus endeth the Dinardo years.
Dinardo did between 40 and 60 percent of the rebuilding job that Sabanistas give 100% credit to the angry little man from West Virginia.
Yes, he ultimately failed (personal loyalty to a failing employee did him in), but not in the improvement in player quality, some facility improvements (on the cheap as bad as Alleva is, Joe Dean was pretty bad, too), and, more importantly morale of the entire program.
But before Tepper, he did good things.

Saban wasn’t elite when we hired him either.
You can’t move the goalposts to fit your narrative.

Arnsparger was not elite, not even close
Depends on your criteria. He is one of the Top 5 DCs in football IMO. The guy took a underperformaing team and immediately won the conference. That’s pretty damn good.
Went to the Sugar bowl in 2 out of the 3 seasons as head coach. Won the conference.
Recruiting was his biggest flaw. He never really did that well.
He was a GREAT DC and the master of the No Name Defense for this Dolphins teams in the early ‘70’s.name and took a terrible Chargers team defensively and made them respectable enough to go to the Super Bowl.

Miles inherited #21, #3, #4 and #14(13 commits).
As a reference Ed's "depleted" inheritance was #2, #5, #2, #6 and I have to give Miles staff partial credit for #7 class of '17 as much of the groundwork was done in '16 or earlier.
We'll see if Ed can accomplish what Miles developed with his somewhat lesser group of signees he inherited from Saban.

Saban was a nobody when LSU hire him. I even remember the collective "Who is Nick Saban, and didnt LSU just throttle his Michigan State team"
This is completely incorrect.

Agree with you totally sir. Also, people forget, but go back and look at the Les hire. He wasn’t our first choice or even our second choice. Depending on who you believe or ask, at the time he was our 5th choice as head coach. Hardly considered elite at the time of his hiring. Whether someone thinks he turned into elite later is a whole other topic.

that's revisionist history. dinardo had recruited very well
Some revisionist history too. Dinardo recruited well in spots but when Saban came in we only had like 60 scholarship players. Dinardo took alot of academically risky recruits and blamed Louisiana high schools for his firing.

“Fewer than 3”
True....as in 1. Lil Nicky is the only ELITE coach LSU has ever had.

I don't believe Saban had VIP Status until he got here, and even then, he became the current legend at Bama

True.
I remember being at a training event with a guy that was a Michigan State hire. He was adamant that Saban was a terrible hire because he could not retain an effective coaching staff due to him being difficult to work with. He predicted that Saban would never last more than 3 years and would never win a conference championship much less a national championship.

Meyer at Utes was pretty interesting at the time also.
I was pleasantly surprised by the time 2008 rolled around.
All in all, LSU could've done worse, and Miles worst 5 year stretch is better than any other LSU coach's best.

The question does not specify that the coach was 'elite' at the time of hire. Fact is Saban was, just that no one knew...

You do know that a Saban accomplished just as much in less than half the amount of time right
miles has as many title game appearance at lsu as saban has top 15 finishes.
and when did saban win 3 sec west titles at lsu?
saban would have been more successful had he stayed but he didn't. hell 40% of his tenure we finished unranked.
