I doubt any baseball players even have full scholarships. I think baseball gets something ridiculous like 7.5 scholarships to split among the team, so I doubt he was going to school on a full ride that was just lost. It is a little different than sports like football and basketball where you have a bunch of guys on full rides.
PM probably just told him he'd be riding the bench and the kid decided it was time to move on.

Saban tells his kids that it's a one year scholarship that you have to earn every year. I'm sure he's not the only FB coach or coach for that matter to do that.

Link?
I don't think mom and dad would love to hear their kid might not get a degree from Alabama.

PM is paid almost one million dollars a year, with all the incentives in his contract. This makes him one of the highest paid coaches in the country!
He has 35 roster spots to work with at LSU. He is tasked with the responsiblity of finding the best 35 baseball players that he possibly can to take the field and win.
All of the players have an understanding that their scholarships are a year to year deal, and everyone will be evaluated at the end of the year.
There isn't anything wrong with what PM did today or has done in the past with players!
This year was a disapointment for everyone, and at least PM relizes that he wasn't brought here to miss regional play and that some tough chocies maybe needed to change our fortunes on the field!

George, seriously, are you just fricking with us?
It's common knowledge that scholarships are renewed every year.

These guys know up front what the deal is from day one. Maybe it's unfair, but that's the real world, get used to it.

Yeah, now I am starting to think this is all just a joke. This happens EVERYWHERE, even at D2 schools. The kid can get a loan like every other college student. He is lucky to have gotten the aid he did get for 2 years and doesn't have to pay back.

Fair enough fellas. I've said my peace. We obviously disagree but to each their own.

Hey, look at that!
I think the 4/5 of us just had a rational discussion on the Rant!

I agree with you. It seemed like Skip didn't do this very much at all if ever. I am not sure how you keep your recruits if they see, if you have a bad year you will get cut. Matty Ott should not have survived if that were the case blowing all of the saves that he did... So to be fair, I beleive Paul needed to have a discussion after fall ball versus now.
Skip never had to do this because there was unlimited roster space. We used to carry at least 45 players on the roster at times.
Thanks for the clarification

Besides, it's not like he hit .367 last year, dropped to .322 this year, THEN got cut.
He was a liability at the plate and in the field. So while some of y'all complain about what PM did today - I don't want to hear you bitch and moan when we suck because he hasn't made any cuts.
Just because you are good enough to get signed by LSU - it doesn't give you a 4 year pass. Did any of you people play any HS sports? It's like the idea of cuts are foreign to you.
Wasn't bitching and moaning about anything. All I am saying is I do NOT care where Matty Ott played his high school baseball, he has STRUGGLED AT BEST the last 2 years and he remained our sorry arse closer, if you read between the lines. What gives Ott a pass using your logic?

If Mainieri said, "Because of your poor play, I'm cutting your scholarship and your spot from the team." Then I think this is a terrible move. As posted before, a college coach should live with their mistakes if they signed the wrong player and it's not a "we'll renew your scholarship if you're good" type of deal.
If Mainieri said, "Your going to be replaced in the lineup next year and you'll primarily be a pinch runner, or a role player," and then Watkins left on his own then that's a different story.
Regardless, this is two years in a row we've lost a starter off of our team, Delatte and Watkins, after they either just quit or were told to leave. It's a major issue in the program right now and a reason that we have no depth.
The 2009 recruiting class was awful, the best player is a walk-on, Mason Katz. We signed Bourgeios and Watkins in late July after losing two high school pitchers. The glaring hole on the 2011 LSU baseball team was only 1 player out of the 2009 class contributed anything positive to this year's team.

Been calling it a long time now.
The 2009 recruiting class was weak as frick.
It's real funny now how it was considered the #3 recruiting class in the country.

It wasn't even in the Top 25 according to the BA link posted here yesterday.

58 Chris Cotton P L/L 5-10 178 So. 1L Shreveport, La. (Byrd HS)
This is LSU's 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes (what's left of it). The 2008 class looks great when you see Mahtook, Nola, Hanover, and Ott. But where is the rest of it? Did we only sign 4 players? Chris Cotton and Mason Katz are walk-ons in the 2009 class, and they've been perhaps the best two players in that class.
This is why LSU had zero depth this year and we were stuck with a left fielder that batted lead-off and hit .220, and we moved an outfielder to first base, and we had no left handed hitters...

Calm down Jake. I wasn't talking about you specifically - that was just a place to express my ideas regarding some people.
Ott didn't get a free pass - he was used a helluva lot less than he had been.
Why keep him?
Because an arm is harder to replace than a bat.

I say if it's strictly performance a kid should not be cut.
So if I have an academic scholarship that requires I have a 3.0. You're saying they shouldn't revoke it if I drop below that line? These coaches don't have enough scholarships to give out every year to waste one on someone who isn't going to contribute to the team.
